The better trout streams in the area are around 1.5 hours or more away. If you head southwest, you can find plenty of mountain streams in the Shenandoah's that hold wild brookies year round. There are other streams/rivers that VA stocks as well. If you head north, the Gunpowder River above Baltimore is a great size stream for a tenkara rod. It has a 7 mile catch and release tailwater that is full of wild browns. Most are between 8-14 inches but there are some larger ones in there two. If your willing to drive 2-3 hours, you can get out to Western Maryland on the Savage River or the Savage River State Forrest which has some excellent mountain streams for brookies.
There are other spots like the Patuxent in MD south of Baltimore, etc that stock each year, but my personal experience is that the stocked streams get pounded early and if your going to fish them and actually enjoy it, its best to wait a month or two after the stocking and see if there are any holdovers. Otherwise, your fighting for space.

Hi,
First post. Newbie fly-fisherman. picked up a Tenkara rod a year ago. Have fished with it mostly for trout in the Sierra ( quite successfully) with it but hoping to extend the hobby locally as this is where I spend 45+ weeks a year. Last weekend fished Holmes run below the dam and only caught blue gill. In the past I've also fished along the Virginia side of the Potomac near the mouth of Pimmit Run.
Wondering if there are any other Tenkara fisherman in the area? Also interested in learning about local trout areas, season, stocking dates for some of the local streams, nd other opportunities and also open to learning about other fisheries. It sounds like Bass fishing is popular in the area.
Thanks,
Mark
