Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New To DC and looking for Smallies

Lisa,
We have found that it's best to let the river drop to 3 ft or below at the little falls station for safe wading in the Potomac.  Here's the website to check:
The river usually doesn't get this low until mid summer, but if you do go out there, go with a friend, a wading staff and it is a good idea to wear a pfd.  Until then, fishing from the bank and outlying rocks around the chain bridge area and above Fletchers can yield some pretty good shad and striper catches.

I do like to catch fish but I also like to get away from the crowds so I'm not afraid to may a hike to a more secluded fishing hole. Any suggestions on which rod to use and favorite patterns would also be helpful. Also, do you guys suggest using a PFD when wading?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New To DC and looking for Smallies

First,

Safety.  The biggest issue is respecting the river.  Wading between little-falls and Great-falls is possible, but can be dangerous. The bottom is just like the rocks around the area, jagged with drop offs and places to get your foot caught (which are also places for fish to hide).  I personally don't like to fish it when the little falls gauge is above 3.8.  Further upstream, the river gets shallower and isn't as bad.  I don't wade in the spring myself.  I wait for the water to warm up and wet-wade when the water gets warmer.   I don't wear a PFD, but swamped waders scare me in the Potomac.

Check the forecast (see the links below),  The prediction is for the river to rise quite a bit this week.  You probably don't want to be wading next weekend.

There are a few people who guide out of Harpers Ferry.  I've used Mark Kovatch (https://www.mkfs.com) and been happy.

Three  sites to keep an eye on for water levels.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Is the shad run over?

Yep -- another fun day with plenty of shad to go around.  I was glad we made it out there.  I'll probably repurpose the same ff706 soon for bass and bluegill duty.

And you're modest Jim -- I think you pulled in more today than everyone within eyeshot put together.  No exaggeration.

You and Ron are extremely courteous anglers and are easy to share a seam with out there --

After a a rough skunking down at Fletchers cove for stripers, Trent Jones and I went after some Bronebacks on the upper Potomac. Fishing was really good. At on point I think we had 10 fish on roughly 12 casts . Crayfish patterns seemed to be the ticket.

The flies north of the dime are #28 PT nymphs I tied a long time ago and never used.  The ones to the east are Al's rats in sizes #20-24, which is a great midge pupa imitation.  The ones south are WD-40s in a #18, which pass for midge pupa and/or small baetis nymphs.  The ones west are zebra midges in #22 and 24 I think.  Those fish well deep, and probably higher as well.  In practice, these are all pretty versatile when trout are eating tiny bugs.

There are a few more than 24 there, but it's worth an order of fish and chips to me if you want it.  Let me know and I'll put 'em in an altoids tin and bring them to you next tie.  For most of these you'll probably want 7x.

Really, the smallest fly I use at all is a #22-24 Al's rat (pupa) in the film, and it really is fun when fish keep hitting it when other things don't work at all.  They're so incredibly easy to tie, it wouldn't make sense to buy them unless you just don't tie at all.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anybody know a good place to buy micro trout flies from?

Okay, found some genuinely small hooks--probably have to get someone to tie them up for you...

We need a beer tie smallest fly tied challenge.

If you want, I can bring you 2 dozen at next beer tie in exchange for an order of fish and chips.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Is the shad run over?

TPFR Alex M. got some big hickories and an American from shore today. American was just under the surface. Loads of schoolies.

Anyone else notice fewer herons than in years past? They used to be all over the river, fighting each other for a good spot. Seems like Vultures outnumber the herons now a days. Fewer snakehead this year too.

They'll eat everything. Rather boring as they don't do much. Remove them from rocks and drop them in. Watch how they move. There isn't a fly out there that mimics their free fall wriggle.

Good water quality!  No, I have to admit to never having kept those critters....so I would just spout empirical evidence based upon where they're found.  That said, you can find them in places with poorer water quality at times.  What type of tank are you running?  Rob has a pretty interesting invert tank going on, possibly with some native (or at least locally collected) fish too (I can't remember).

I'm dealing with hair algae and remembering why I quit my tank obsession 10 years ago -- lol.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Session saver smallmouth

Nice. The fish in the Potomac are much better sized this year. My first of the year, taken last week, was a beaut. Also added a hellgramite and a bunch of golden stonefly nymphs to my fish tank from the same session! ...any tips on how to keep my hellgramite alive hivemind, a.k.a. Gene?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Keys Trip Partner

Derek-

What time of year were you thinking of making a trip? And what species do you want to target?

As others mentioned, Long Key is cheaper 'lodging' option between Islamorada and Marathon and has a great bonefish flat right out front of the tent camping sites located on the East End. Unfortunately the campground fills up way in advance (they are currently booking and for April 2017). There may be some tent sites open in August at the earliest. Like others mentioned, Curry Hammock is another option, and you may find a bit more, but still limited availability for the summer, but the sites are not quite as nice as Long Key and you won't have the same type of bonefishing right off your campsite. Bahia Honda is a bit outside of the range you gave (on the West side of the seven mile bridge) but does have good camping and a decent beach/flat out front for bonefish, barracuda and at certain times of year snook.

Partnering on a charter is for sure the way to go, particularly if it is your first time fishing in the Keys. If you let me know what you would like to target I (and I'm sure several others here) can give you a recommendation.

As far as Tarpon fishing from a kayak, it certainly can be done consistently for the larger fish although as others have mentioned the strong tides around the bridges make it highly technical for fly-fishing. Bahia Honda in anything but a Hobie would be an immense amount of work and presentation would be challenging. You'd be far better off out front casting at schools of fishing cruising West. These fish are going to be more likely to key in on a fly anyways.

I could easily see where it can be done using a spinning rod which seems to be how most of the ones I saw on google were caught.  Its hard to tell how many of those fish were caught on a fly rod (if any).

A quick google search will turn up tons of pictures. I guess it's your definition of "all the time" but it's certainly not uncommon. I only been to the Keys a couple times to fish for migratories, but every time I've been out (for tarpon or otherwise), I've seen 3 or 4 people on kayaks chasing the big boys. I also know quite a few people that go offshore for sailfish, marlin, and tuna and launch a kayak to fish from the mother ship. There's a pretty crazy big game kayak fishing community out there.

I have spent a lot of time fishing the keys for tarpon and I cannot fathom how difficult it would be to fish for them from a kayak.  From positioning your boat, to seeing them, to making the cast, to feeding them, would be extremely difficult.  Never mind once you actually hook them.  I highly doubt it happens all the time.  Maybe baby tarpon, but the big migratory fish, I don't think so.
