Record 2018 rainfall over the Potomac watershed caused many high water events of extended duration. The average flow exceeded the norm by 200-400% for the last half of 2018. As a result most all Potomac River access points suffered damage from excessive debris and siltation. The sheer velocity of the high water flows dramatically altered the Fletchers Cove river bottom. In this photo album you will see how the debris, sediment and small stone have drifted into positions which make the dock mostly inaccessible from the walkway. We are effectively cut off from access to the Potomac from the FC dock.

Due to the federal government shutdown FFC and its primary stakeholders are unable to present an emergency repair plan to act upon.

We need your help. Weather and conditions permitting FFC is considering hosting a late winter clean up day to help regain access to the lower parking lot and reconnect the floating walkway to the existing dock. The work will require volunteers to move driftwood from the driveway and clear a path to the base of the floating walkway so we may attempt to reconnect it to the dock. The work will be heavy and it will be muddy. We will also ask you sign a waiver of any liability.

Should the shutdown continue and nothing is done there is a real chance we may not have access to the river from the dock this spring.  If you are able and willing please submit your name, contact info and days of the week you are available using this web form.  FFC will coordinate the effort and follow up with a date and time once we are able to gauge the level of volunteer interest from our friends and followers.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Cancun

Brian,

DIY in Cancun can be a tough sell.   The beaches on the ocean side always look amazing, but many of the hotels will string nets paralleling the beaches just to keep the urchins off the resorts so the gringos won't step on them.  The lagoon on the western side of the Zona Hotelera has snook and baby tarpon in it, but you'll need to find a place to rent SUPs or kayaks.  Oh yeah, there are crocs in there too, so beware.

Most people that are staying that far north in Cancun will take day trips to Isla Blanca, which is about 40 minutes away from the hotels.  Contact Kirk Seely at Cancun Fly Guides - fish@cancunflyguides.com .   They'll arrange to pick you up at the hotel, take you fishing, feed you, take pictures, and drop you back off.

If you want to travel further out and are a bit more adventurous, you have 2 options – Isla Holbox, and Cozumel, but you're looking at renting a car (about $65 a week) or taking an Uber or cab each way, anywhere from an hour and a half or more.

Let me know if there's anything else you want to know.

Regards,

R

I've fished Holbox for tarpon to the north and Punta Allen for permit to the south. Both are top-notch fisheries but not exactly easy to get to from where you will be.

If all else fails, and you can't find anything DIY, try asking the lifeguards and sailing/SUP instructors along the beach hotels for advice. They'll speak English well and will appreciate una buena propina for pointing you in the right direction or even taking you out to the reef, themselves - which I've heard of at some of the high end resorts.

¡Buena suerte!

Try asking your concierge, and if they don't know, find a sailing or SUP instructor at one of the beach hotels and ask them for recommendations.

Rob, I enjoyed learning more about the Mayfly Project on your podcast.  I will gladly get tying to donate.  Suggested patterns?  Foam spiders, weenies, bluegill bugs kind of stuff?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Motivation for a special regulations and delayed harvest sections

In the context of trout streams that are not stocked by the state, what motivates the designation of a Special Regulations section.  Case in point, the Hazel River vs The Special Reg section of the Rapidan.  What is different about the Rapidan that warrants special regulations whereas the Hazel river is only covered by the usual 6 less than 7".  Is this motivated by some biological aspect of the fishery? historical use of the river? some local landowner lobbying?

Along the same lines, what is the primary motivation for designating an area as delayed harvest section while others are just put and take?  The motivation for Delayed Harvest, in general, seems obvious; I am guessing it prevents the whole stretch of the creek being completely harvested within a short window after the stocking truck leaves allowing more anglers to have fun over a longer period of time.  But why designate one specific tailwater as delayed harvest while leaving another tailwater as put and take?

cheers
Corey

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Jungle Cock

There is also a tiny old fashioned fly called a Jassid. Used in high summer as I remember.

As far as I know that is what they're for, streamers and salmon flies.

I giggled at the subject line.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Cancun

I thought I would see if anyone has any updated info about fly fishing in Cancun, or has any recommendations?

I will be there in March for a few days and will be looking to get out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Jungle Cock

I see that I can buy full jungle cock capes online (not cheap, but kinda cool) is there anything else they are used in other than streamer eyes to justify the price tag?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Canoe stabilizers/outriggers

I recently got an old Coleman canoe that I plan to use on local rivers and small lakes; however, I don't feel comfortable standing and casting in it solo or with a second person. I would like to get some kind of stabilizer or outrigger so 2 people can stand and fish from it. Been looking at the wingman but would really appreciate any recommendations or advice from the group. Thanks! Also, once I get something I would be happy to plan a float or hit a lake with someone!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Lake Moomaw/Jackson River

Are you asking about fishing upstream or downstream from the dam? If downstream there is a bit of access but you should absolutely do some research to make sure you aren't going on private land. If you google around you should be able to find plenty of info on the lawsuits that have occurred over access.

If you are asking about upstream of the dam there is good acesss in hidden valley. Supposedly fish run out of the lake but I have never tried for them and am unsure as to whether they make it up as far as the public areas.
