{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Report #6

I neglected to post this link last Monday. As predicted, the American shad run at Fletcher's picked up early this week after water temps fell, then again yesterday with another temperature drop. Also, the schoolie striper showing is incredible this year, providing some excellent fly fishing. Don't miss it!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bluegill Tournament is Back (June 2024)

For those who don't use Venmo, can we bring our entry fee to the next Casting Church on Sunday or the Beer Tie on Monday?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} CASTING for Sunday, 12 May

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 12 May at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am. I know this is Mother's Day, so bring your mom (or the mother of your children) and introduce her to the group, then take her to brunch.

No particular focus for this Casting Church but bring your gear questions and questions on how to cast. We will work thru struggles you may be having.

Additionally, we will work on FFI Casting Skills challenges for anyone interested.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges.

If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Golden Dorado Argentina

Hi guys,

I'm headed to Argentina this fall to target Golden Dorado and the outfitter says there are a couple spots still available.

Trip dates are Oct 1-7 (likely have to overnight travel from US starting Sept 30) and the outfitter cost is $3600 + your airfare + tips ($250), and $150 for r/t luxury bus fare to and from the lodge. The outfitter cost covers lodging, food, and five full days of fishing.

To learn more about the lodge and fishing trip go to:  https://www.amazon-angler.com/trip/don-joaquin-river-lodge/

The owner of Amazon Angler who puts these trips together is Steve Townson.  I did a great  trip to fish for peacock bass with him last fall on the Rio Negro in Brazil.  Most communication is via Whatsapp ( he is based on Europe): +351 917 812 328
You can also email at: info@amazon-angler.com

Let me know if you have any questions.  I don't know much more about the trip itself beyond what I've read online but can share about my experience on the previous trip.

Best,
Wayne

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Occaquan - rockfish...

Hi Peter.  You were luckier than me.  I showed up at Penguin Paddling at 11am to rent a kayak and fish for a couple of hours.  I headed straight for the pedestrian bridge and fished just upstream of it.  I did not get as high upstream as the rock garden you mention, and it looks like I should have.  I was also fishing a tandem of shad flies and then switched to a clouser trailing a shad fly.  I got '0' takes on either side of that bridge.  It was not until I got down to the Village that I had any action - but it was just a couple of takes.  I picked up one herring, of which there appeared to be an abundance of, and what I presume was a shad or small striper, but lost it before I could get it to the surface.  I had expected more action, but I think the shad were busy spawning.  You must have hit the right morning tide accommodating a run of stripers chasing the herring.

Everything was on the normal shad flies i used.  I added a big clouser hoping that I might find a bigger rockfish, but nothing liked it.

Is this a normal occurrence or a fluke?  I'd love to get back out there, but don't want to waste a morning.  I fished the entire area back to the park takeout, and didn't find any more.
