{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Belize for Christmas

Awesome, thanks a lot John. Very helpful. Real excited as well, first time on any kind of flats and look forward to the great environment. Only other question I have would be about wading boots when walking down the stretch of secret beach. I have some slip on water shoes with a pretty solid bottom to it but the topside is mostly a mesh like material. Would I be fine with these or opt for the more protective boot style shoe given coral and what not. Also thanks again, really helpful information leading up to the trip.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Belize for Christmas

Hey Dylan,

I just was down there last winter for New Years, you're in for a phenomenal trip. I also brought all my gear and had no problems with TSA. I would however recommend bringing a lockable suitcase, a couple other folks in my group had a problem with one of the local airlines rummaging through their bags and taking some stuff.

Here are my recommendations as far as fishing goes:

That time of year tends to have a pretty strong East wind, so all of the flats on the ocean side of the Caye probably won't be fishable. I strongly recommend renting a quality golf cart in San Pedro with big tires and good suspension, it'll be able to get you where you need to go.

I found some good flats by heading north from San Pedro and west to Secret Beach. It's the only major road that heads west off the main road, you can't miss it. It's about 5 miles from SP and my recollection is it's about a 45 minute golf cart ride. The roads are pretty bumpy so it can be slow going at times.

At secret beach, head south and work the flats. Even with a strong wind they'll stay fairly fishable, because they're protected by Ambergris Caye. I'd recommend starting at Blue Bayou and heading as far south as you can. If you can spend the whole day, I'd head south all the way to the third major cove where you'll see some buildings under construction. That was the best fishing I had on foot, but it is quite a hike.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want more info, it's great to hear you're going down there. I can't wait to get back.

John

I second Miss Britt. Very professional operation. Only negative is they can kind of make it feel like tourney fishing sometimes.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} School of Trout - Henry's Fork Recap

Wow. Add a plane ticket, drinks, requested gratuities, and that Basic Trout class is about $10K, or almost two grand per day. I think I stumbled into the wrong river.

On Nov 4, 2019, at 1:28 PM, Andrew R <andrewreichardt88@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi there TPFRers,

Haven't done a recap of one of my trips in a long time but thought that this one was worth at least summarizing. Last month I had the privilege of attending the School of Trout on the Henry's Fork in Last Chance, Idaho. I applied for the Hatch Magazine scholarship to the school back in the spring and while I didn't win it, I was ultimately awarded a scholarship by Trout Unlimited to attend.

I'd never been to Idaho and never fished the Henry's Fork. I'd been told that it in many parts fishes like a giant spring creek. Lots of vegetation, slow glassy water and skittish fish. I'd say that that description was mostly spot-on with the Box Canyon section a notable exception.

I arrived at TroutHunter on a brisk but not terrible 45 degree day. Great food and beer was consumed that night. The next day was good weather as well (more below) but then the temperatures dropped into the single digits and hung there for the next few days. School of Trout is sort of an unusual format for a fishing trip as it's really more of like a fly-fishing tutorial on steroids. We had class each day in the morning, a casting session, another class in the afternoon and fishing afterwards.

<PA090741.jpeg>

The first day we stuck to that set-up pretty much, with talks from Hilary Hutcheson on fly fishing equipment and John Juracek on casting. With a few hours of sunlight remaining we headed up to the Box Canyon section for some fishing, joined by Tom Rosenbauer who walked the beginners through reading water, fly selection, etc. The class was told to fish dry droppers. I took one look at the fast broken water and decided to go with a tightline nymphing rig instead. 20-30 minutes of getting my depths/drifts dialed in and I was suddenly on several fish in a row, including one very nice 16 inch colored-up rainbow. Needless to say, I thought I was going to put on a clinic. This did not happen. One very spastic whitefish later and my tightline rig was a bird's nest and with only a few minutes of fishing left, my day was done.

<PA070448.jpeg>

Like I mentioned, a strong cold front sweeped through Idaho/Montana that night, with temperatures sticking to a narrow range in the single digit-teens. The instructors made the easy call and fishing was off for the next few days. Instead we were treated to a deluge of knowledge from some of the world's most celebrate anglers. Tom Rosenbauer, John Juracek, Kirk Deeter, Craig Mathews, Tim Romano, Jeff Currier, Hilary Hutcheson and others provided us with an incredible depth of information on fishing. Of particular note were Tom Rosenbauer's talk on bugs and fly selection; Jeff Currier's talks on streamer tactics as well as tightline nymphing (Jeff is the most accomplished competition angler in US history); and Tim Romano's talk on fly fishing photography.

<SOT Group.jpg>

If you feel so disposed, I'd encourage you to take a gander at my article in Hatch Magazine.

Also, if you have any interest in School of Trout, or the scholarship program, please feel free to give me a shout.

Tight Lines,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} NW Quantico fishing

After booking rob Snowhite for some great education I took what I learned to NW quantico and fished Upshur Pond and Cedar Run. I imagine most people pass on fishing these two bodies of water since they are not easy to access but I was rewarded with almost constant action at both locations. Upshur pond resulted in several LMB, mostly 8-10 inches and several nice bluegills. Action was hot with a strike or a hook up on nearly every cast. I fished a custom tied popper with a San Juan worm dropper. Requires waders as there is too much shore cover to fish from land. A couple days later I went to cedar run, also by the camp Upshur area, and was rewarded by a good time on big Fall Fish up to maybe 14 inches. And they were very aggressive. Same flies as I used at the pond. Sometimes I hooked up on doubles. Water was low, maybe 30 inches was the deepest I found. But steady action again. With lots of bluegills mixed in. I'm looking forward to getting some
Orders to this area and living here. I'll be a regular at the beer ties for sure.
