Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Next Casting Church - Shad fishing theme

Might as well make that X3 for today's casting church.

I was given some pointers and got in some casting practice before the wind kicked up. This outing included a lot of practice applying techniques to get unsnagged. While I didn't get much fishing in I did get one firm strike while stripping. Wasn't expecting it and missed setting the hook. (So for me it was a good day.)  The Cormorants and Osprey were having a field day fishing.

Orientation to the DC riverside terrain was excellent. (Being part Mountain Goat wouldn't hurt transiting parts of this river.) An added bonus for me was the opportunity to get a clear view of the river terrain on the Virginia side.

All in all it was a great experience.
Thank you for your time.

Setting a theme for this church meeting, fly casting/fishing for shad on the Potomac from Fletcher's. We will first meet to talk about tackle set up, both single hand and double hand: rods, lines, tips, leaders, flies. We will discuss casting techniques, and we discuss how to fish for shad. Casting a heavy sink tip or full sinking line requires some changes in technique and tempo. We will then walk upstream. The goal here is to show off the river-left bank and how you would solve casting problems from various locations.

This is NOT a guided trip. The goal here is to get educated on the river and solve casting problems for fishing for shad from the bank. This will involve a fair bit of walking, added up throughout the morning, and some of the walking will be on rocks with angled surfaces. Some of the fishing locations involve standing on angled rock surfaces. Tripping and falling are a concern. A wading staff helps for balance. Please plan accordingly.

Waders and boots are strongly recommended, though not required. This is NOT full wade fishing (that is illegal), but we do get wet walking thru shallow water to get to locations. It is perfectly possible to successfully fish for shad from the bank and not need waders at all.

Bring your gear, and we will help you rig up.  You will need some kind of sink tip (10ft or so) or a full sinking line, fast sink is better.

See you there,

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Mountain Brookies Armory

it depends if you get a 3wt thats not built for nymphing it may not be that different than your five weight. But with my 10ft 3wt nymphing stick I can feel almost everything, there is definitely more feel to it.so while generally the lower in rod weights you go the lighter/more sensitive you go there will be exceptions. I fished a 4wt 11ft the other day, also a specialty nymph stick, and that was also very sensitive. However, the day before I casted a 6wt rod by the same company (Douglas) that felt like a 7.

As much as it is the weight, what the rod was built for will make a difference. Best example is like my nine weights, I have sage method nineweight and a sage rplxi nineweight. Both sage nineweighs, the method however is fast action, very stiff, whereas the rplxi is a little slower and softer.

conclusion: if you serious about nymphing, want to do more tightlining and "czech" nymphing, get a specialty nymph rod - just be careful you may never go back.

Hi Misha and others,

Change of plans on the dates, the March 30 date has fallen through and the kick-off party is moved back to April 13 at 1PM at District Angling.

The new date is reflected here: https://www.tidalpotomacslam.org/dates.html

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Mountain Brookies Armory

Whatttup everyone,

I hit the doah two weeks ago and brought two rods, both three weights. One was the Echo Shadow II Nymphing stick (coming in at 10ft) and the other was an Echo Glass Rod (coming in at 7'6 feet, i believe). Why two? One for dries and one for nymphs, duh, but surprisingly I put my fiberglass stick away and was only using the nymph rod.

Yes, the ten foot rod was a PAIN to bring through the woods, yet it was awesome for nymphing these pools, even though the river I was on is small the length of the 10 footer helped me do better drifts.

I am going again this weekend, BUT broke my nymph rod in PA this weekend. So, who knows what i will do.... feeling naked without the nymph stick :(

help? Desperate to fish but is it stupid to drive in to the Potomac this evening? Have a few free hours and can go from 4 mile to chain bridge but if it is completely blown out will hit an area pond or two. Any input appreciated. Thank you

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Next Casting Church - Shad fishing theme

Regan,
Thanks so much for doing this.

I have a double-handed rod which I've been wanting to use for shad but wasn't sure where to start. I bought the rod in Ireland while fishing for salmon but haven't gotten much use out of it since. I'm all set with a sinking line but don't have any flies. Can I buy those at fletcher's the morning of?

See you next Sunday.

Best,
Mike

Next Casting Church, Sun 31 March, at Fletcher's.  8am in the lower parking lot. Park where you can, we will meet at one of the picnic tables near the boat shop.

Regan

Ah was there the first of Feb doing the DIY thing with my kayak. Don't think I had nearly as much fun though. Few redfish, snook, and a wee little tarpon. Nothing to alert the media about, but it was a blast.

I quite like this rod (I got it for brookie hunting), and the price certainly was right. With decent line it casts well even if I am using it for sunfish or something at a pond.

I'll try to attend as well. I'm new to the group and just getting into fly fishing. I've been fishing with conventional tackle for 25 years or so, but have always wanted to break into fly fishing. So I finally pulled the trigger and got my first outfit (single hand). Are these event's usually held at Fletcher's? I saw there was one there recently but didn't see a location for this date.

I met Kemper through Massanutten Trout Unlimited club meetings.  He was a tremendous person who gave greatly of his personal time and knowledge to our community of trout fisherman.  As a newbie fly fisherman, he and others took me under their wings and help improve my fishing skills.  I enjoyed my time on the river with him, he will be greatly missed.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Upper Rose River

I found that you should go up the fire trail about 1/2 to 3/4 a mile then walk to the river and hike up.  it gets braided and skinny quick and i rarely see an brookies below this areas.   there is a trail off the fire rd that takes you down to the river.  when you see it you know its time to walk down....if your point is to see the rose then great,  but there are better sections of brookie streams not to far from there that i now go to instead of the rose.    send me an email if you are looking for an alternative near by

WG stocks one of their ponds with rainbows. 3 aerators have been installed in the pond. It's a great resource, well managed and under utilized.
I went on 2 different days. The 1st day it took me a few hrs to figure out that they were into salmon egg imitations, then game on.
Caught about 2 dozen over the 2 days.
