Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing Italy (My wife things I'm crazy, but...)

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the insights and suggestions. I'll continue to look for options and will certainly let folks know what I find in Italy.

Thanks Again,
Dave

I'm going to Italy the first week of july and won't be fishing, but my general sense just from reading about the country is that any decent fishing would be further north than you will be.  I'm sure there is the Rome/Tuscany equivalent of 4 mile run (i.e somewhere you wouldn't dream of fishing unless you really didn't have anywhere better to go) but doesn't seem like there is much otherwise that would be worth bringing a flyrod along.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: OBX Fishing Report/Review

I actually spoke with her about casting instruction and she told me to schedule a lesson or two with Mark Kovach, who was her primary casting instructor (according to her, "he's forgotten more about fly casting than I'll learn in my lifetime"). She also learned to cast from Lefty Kreh, who apparently took her on as a casting pupil, and it definitely showed.

I later realized just how far 40 yards really is, so yeah that's probably a bit (or a lot) of an overstatement. I was actually getting the whole line out which was definitely a personal first as I typically get ten yards and a nice cascade of tangled line.

That said, please share if you find something awesome as I will be in those areas (Rome, Siena/Tuscany) and would maybe consider bringing a rod if there was something that was really can't miss.

Ended up getting swamped with kid/family responsibilities, so wasn't able to get out on the water. Sucks…

I've heard similar reports about Cape Henlopen. I'll have to check that out.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fredericksburg Float....If we ever get lower water

Thanks!  I made it out Saturday evening.  I put in at Motts Run and we paddled hard upstream a ways and then floated to the first fast water.  I need to get a rack on my car for a canoe so I can float to the city.  the mid day fishing was slow with only a few smaller smallmouth and a tiny striper, but the second the sun started dipping, they slammed poppers.  Mostly small fish, but my dad hooked into what looked to be a really nice smallie that broke him off (he fishes ultralight spin gear).  I did get him on the fly rod a few times and he caught a couple.  Most of the early day action was on a dark olive crayfish pattern I tied on a 8 streamer hook.

I'd love to get out again in some clearer water and try around some of the larger boulders.

Question: A number of the smallmouth had dark eyes, but a few had red eyes.  They weren't rock bass, or at least those that I am familiar with.  Are there numerous species of smallmouth in the rapp?

Gregg

Gregg,
There are pros and cons to the lack of access on the Rapp. The cons are that there aren't than many short trips, but once you get on the water you can have a wilderness experience an hour from DC.

For half day trips my first recommendation would be the motts run to fall hill avenue float. Take out just past the VOC but before the first major rapids. There are some Rapids ( the ones you can see from 95) that include one class 2+/3 but it is runnable at most fishable levels in an open canoe.

Another short section near town is Elys ford to hunting run on the Rapidan. We fished there tonight and had about 18" visibility and caught several smallmouth on large sliders fished around rocks. There were lots of active carp but we never got a shot at them.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: C&O Sipping Carp?

Sightfishing NSH in the canal is definitely possible!  I've tried it (with spinning gear), though not to any great success, due to sloppy casting and short time.  I've done so successfully in the Tidal Basin.  Pattern doesn't seem to mater much on spinning gear or fly, to my (limited) knowledge, just something big enough to be food and flashy enough to p*** them off!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Upper Potomac - Boat Selection

You need a jet for that stretch of the river....that Crestliner is great but you will knock the lower unit off in no time. The only other suggestion for  bigger boat up there (prop) is something with a tunnel hull and jack plate. G3 makes one.

Plenty of nice jet boats for choices.

Lots of folks that run a prop in the upper river have smaller boats with smaller engines and they protect their props with some type of a  prop saver device.

I have a 17' Targa  with a 115 and NO WAY would I take it up there even though I store it at Algonkian.

Good luck!

I've gone out for the past few days. Mulberry hatch is starting to pick up. Got five in a couple hours yesterday. I'm on the canal now if anyone wants to join. PM me.

lol no worries.  I was half giving you a hard time and half curious if she really taught you hold to cast that far (of course not knowing how far you could cast prior)  in a couple hours because if so I would make a trip down there just for a casting lesson.

120 foot cast?  Impressive.  Most guys are lucky if they can throw the whole fly line.

Caught a couple nice stripers, a species that's been on my bucket list for a while. Then the tough work started out in the ocean, where we were targeting sharks and Cobia. Fishing for these behemoths was exhilarating and stressful but by far the coolest thing I've done on a fly rod. Sarah was patient, instructive, gracious and an all around awesome guide. While I never got one on the hook, casting giant bucktail flies in 10 mph+ winds, on a boat pitching back and forth in heavy waves definitely has given me newfound confidence in my ability to accurately deliver the fly under most circumstances.

If you are down here this summer, I couldn't more highly recommend a guide than Sarah.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Upper Potomac - Boat Selection

I wanted it so I went and got it last June: Appomattox River Co demo day is excellent. I went to try as many kayaks as possible and it was fun but also mind boggling the number of makes and models of boats available to try. They'll provide a PFD, but it you have your own, take it with you. Factory reps will be there not only for the boats but also for accessories, paddles, etc.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fredericksburg Float....If we ever get lower water

Gregg,
There are pros and cons to the lack of access on the Rapp.

Speaking of the canal, anyone have a good handle on how far down it has water? Georgetown?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: C&O Sipping Carp?

Carp fishing in the canal was amazing yesterday. I probably got 40+ shots at fish. I caught 4, which I'd normally be proud of, but a 10% hook-up rate ain't great.

Nick, pretty cool that you saw it! I did hear about it - it's actually nationally syndicated for Coastal Angler Magazine, so anywhere that has that magazine in the country will get to see my smiling face. My compensation for use of the picture was supposed to be them sending me a few copies, but they never did and ignored all my emails/calls afterwards. I'd love it if you (or anyone) stumbled upon it snagged a copy or two for me!

I had no idea what kind of tree it was (thanks for the lesson Jeff) but I have fished to those guys before with little success with a fly that pretty closely matched the seed pods.  Seems like most of those fish are smaller, and given the amount of naturals on the water, it was a challenging proposition to get one of them to focus on my imitiation.  Had much better luck (and lots more fun) targeting the active, bigger feeders south of lock 7 with crawfish patterns and wolly buggers for whatever that is worth.

By the way Jeff, I saw you on the cover of a Florida saltwater magazine holding one of the redfish you caught with Greg Moon.  Not sure if you were aware of that or not, but I can try to track it down for you if you haven't seen it!  Pretty cool accomplishment...  One of my bucketlist items actually! haha.

TPFR crew,

Took my dog out yesterday for some afterwork fishing, targeting smallmouths on the C&O by Lock 7. Had moderate success, catching two and getting broken off by a third after he ducked into the downed tree I was targeting.

Anyways, as I worked my way down towards lock 6 I noticed a number of large carp (a few looked at least 20lbs+). I stopped for about ten minutes to watch them as I've never really targeted carp and was curious to learn more about them. I noticed two behaviors. 1) Like advertised, three or four of them were working their way slowly along the canal floor kicking up mud with their mouths as they dredged for food. 2) I noticed most of the other carp were close to the bank and appeared to be sipping like a trout? I would guess they're eating either insects or small vegetation/berries, but their actions reminded me more of a fishing suffocating from low oxygen. Anyways, for those more carp inclined/experienced, what's the explanation?

Also, I'm now pretty intrigued and definitely want to start targeting carp going forward. I know they love mulberry imitations, but are there other good flies for the canal I should start tying?

Thanks

Andrew
