{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cheeky Schoolie Tourney

Hey Gregg!

I fished the tournament last year and will be doing so again this year. It is an absolute blast ran by great folks and solid sponsors.

If you're going to do it, I'd recommend pre-fishing a day or two before the tournament. Last year I was able to pre-fish a couple days before the crowds arrived (340 total participants invade Denis on tournament day) and got to experience my first cinder worm hatch on the first evening, in addition to some spectacular skinny water bass antics in the days leading up to the event. While the big fish eluded us on the day of the event (as is life), it was a really fun time in a really cool place.

The logistics of the trip are pretty easy ...finding the winning fish that's the hard part...I'd recommend flying into Boston or Providence that Thursday night, renting a car, and booking a hotel room in the vicinity of Denis, MA. That way you can pre-fish AND hit the Tournament Pre-Party on Friday all while only missing one day of work. There are some inexpensive motels in and around Denis that can fit the budget if split with your teammate. In terms of cost, it'll probably be a trip in the $300-500 range per person for the weekend including airfare, lodging, rental car, etc.

Hope this helps!

Stay fly,
Rem

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Christmas Island

Sounds great
I had been there many years ago and while the fishing was good, don't recall any 60 fish days.
Glad to hear it was so good as I had been under the impression that the fishery had declined because of some overfishing.
Would be great to get back there.

There are multiple Christmas Islands in the Pacific, the red crab invasion happens on one much closer to Australia, not the Kiribati based Christmas Island (very confusing, as we thought we found the red crab info on one of the local websites.).  If you watch the crab video, it shows highways with divider lines and an overpass for the crabs; I can assure you there was nothing like that infrastructure wise where we were.  One flight in and our per week, nothing to do but fish, no landing at night.

One highlight was a bonefish spawn, which schools up the big guys a few days after a new moon.  My friend andy (first time bonefisherman) caught a 10lb fish his first day of bonefishing.  These islands used to be the Gilbert Islands and are about 1200 miles directly south from Honolulu.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Christmas Island

Pretty funny, I always knew about the fishing Christmas Island (and is on my bucket list for the next year or two before kids might become a thing), but didn't realize there were multiple.

I feel like catching a 10lb bonefish on your first day will probably ruin bonefishing for someone forever!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Christmas Island

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Shad Flies

I made my own shad fly that has been super effective and it picks up other fish as well.

The name of the fly is a Red-Headed Flasher.

The original Recipe was a streamer hook.  You tie in large deepwater eyes.  You then tie in some marabou for a tail and some flashabou.  Then you rap to the head with Pearl estaz.  The head had a rap of red yarn then overrapped with the pearl estaz.  I have changed the pattern over the years to rap the head with red estaz, tied in red thread, and I have tied it in chartreuse.

First picture showes the redheaded flasher in Chartreuse.  There is also one in the second picture

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} rapidan fire road-anyone been on it lately?

Haven't been up there since Thanksgiving.  Driving a stock GMC Yukon XL.  It is worse than it use to be when I was up there last summer.  But still very passable.  Few spots I had to go in reverse a few yards and pick a different line.  Worth the drive tho if your friend hasn't seen it.  I've fished from NY to AL and still brag about my hometown streams in the park.

Just got back from a great week on Kirimati (Christmas) Island chasing trevally and bonefish, with a stop in the bluewater for tuna and wahoo.  Trip exceeded expectations, if you haven't gone, I'd recommend it highly.  I went with a group at Crystal Beach Resort, one of about 4 resorts total on the island.  Last day was 60 bonefish plus a couple trevally.  Used my 6wt for some of the bonefish, but mostly 8wt, and 10 wt (with a honking reel) for bigger fish.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Flies

We'll spend March and April beer ties on shad flies. My preference is a 1/16 jig head fly with my damsel nymph about 18" behind.

Google image 'Potomac shad fly pattern' and you see flies by several TPFR members like Alex And Kevin.

Talking to so many people a Somerset about our world class fishery. Telling them how it's the next big travel destination. If only it lasted longer.
