{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rapidan Report 9.28.13

This past Saturday I did a guided trip on the upper Rapidan in the SNP. Caught almost 20 brookies throughout the day. No giant ones, but several were really showing off their spawning colors. We fished mostly beetles with a few ants and a couple mayfly imitations as well. There were some giant mayflies hatching, but not one specific species consistently. The fish were pretty eager to eat, and I even took three out of one pool - which surprised us since we figured the first would've spooked the rest of the pool. We didn't see anyone else was on the river, which was great. The flow has gotten pretty low since there hasn't been much rain lately, but still good enough. There probably isn't much time left before leaf litter becomes a big problem, and before we need to give them a break for the spawn, so I'd get out soon if I were you!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fall Turnover?

Thanks Dan! So I would assume areas like the duck pond and tidal basin would not be affected due to the tide mixing the water?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fall Turnover?

Matt,
basically cooler, denser water sinks to the bottom as night temps drop and forces warmer water that has been there all summer to the surface.  This can lower oxygen levels in shallow waters and generally makes the lake muddy.  It's seen more in lakes that stabilize; smaller, deeper waters with less current or wind are more likely to do this.  The potomac won't do it because it is a river and the water is moving enough to keep it from getting as stratified.

Many ponds and lakes around will experience fall turnover.  I noticed several small ponds last week that showed characteristics of fall turnover with those cool nights we experienced so it's already happening.  Luckily timing and intensity vary between lakes, so if one pond does it, another is probably not turned over yet or is already recovered into fall patterns.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac Fishing Report 9.29.13

Bruce,

Yes I was wading and have been doing so all summer with out any incident. It would be hard for a police officer to drive by on the GW Parkway and see anyone at the spot along the tunnel wall. Probably going back tonight as my father in law's plane has been delayed several hours and I'm taking him to the airport ;)

Rebecca Davenport, Scott Stankus and I fished the tide change at Gravelly tonight. Me and Davenport spotted a meteor over DC which was pretty awesome.
I had two hook ups. First one broke me off on a 12lb tippet and was the hardest bite I've ever experienced around here, similar to a steelhead. Next cast after I rigged up was with a white CK Baitfish. First cast got me a fat striper, probably the 3rd biggest I've pulled out of the Potomac. I left at 7:45.

Glad Trent got into some Mr. Pajama Pants tonight too.

I fished the Tidal Basin from about 4-430 this afternoon. The incoming tide was beginning to peter out as I arrived, but I still stuck a handful of Stripers around 12" each. Being that I was in jeans and flip-flops, I called it quits as the tide began to overtake the concrete walkway I was standing on. Size 2 Chart/White Clousers on a sinking line did the trick.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac Fishing Report 9.29.13

I got one around 8:30 - also on a white CK Baitfish. Personal best for me - between 16" and 18".

The weeds were really bad, though - thick mats of floating weeds that got tangled around the fly and fly line. Was thinking a stripping basket might have been useful.

Also saw tons of baby Shad feeding on the surface. I missed seeing the meteorite though...

Planning another trip back in a few years to spend more time fishing with shorter hikes between lakes and streams. Most everything I caught was on Stimulators, caught a few on damsel nymphs. Wish I had a brought smaller hopper patterns as the only ones I had were too big.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} A very late fishing report from Yosemite/Ansel Adams Wilderness

Wow, the beauty of that place is astounding.  Especially while I'm on the couch -- I better get out soon!  Pretty fish too -- thanks for sharing ;).

John Bilotta and I are fortunate enough to be attending the Clearwater
Clave this year. Today started at 10 am with a THCI test prep class hosted
by Lee Davidson and Al Buhr along with three additional THCI instructors.
With only three candidates showing up, the math was greatly in our favor
and for the next 4 hours received personal instruction covering each cast
required on the THCI test. Having world class instructors to expose all
your casting flaws was an enormous learning experience. The Clave
officially starts tomorrow with an impressive lineup of presentations -
    http://www.redshedflyshop.com/CLAVEPROGRAM.html

Oh and then we went fishing ! - The Clearwater is a big river suited for
traditional Spey long belly lines and is full of steelhead and salmon !

Yeah you are right - it is worth!!!...Just need to be patient in crowded
place. I also got better skill with casting because of that!
I did not have chance to measure & weight it - it might be around 25 to 30
lbs and 36" long. I was told that it is female with fat belly - eggs. I
guess that it is on the way to spawn place by now because the zone I caught
is the last place before the salmon ladder.

Backcountry - There are a couple of good sites at the bottom of Jeremy's
Run. Two good ones on the Rose River Loop trail where it connects to the
Dark Hallow Falls trail. Big Run is one of my favorite places to back
country camp and fish but like Matt said it is a haul to get down there and
the last 2 miles on the hike out cover about 1400 ft. of vertical. Big Run
also will dry up quickly if it hasn't rained and this time of year there
will be a ton of bears down there( just a heads up they won't bother you).

Rapidan- If you have a truck you can take the dirt road that runs beside
the Rapidan and camp right beside the stream at designated sites in the
    Wildlife Management area.

The 4 campgrounds in the park are all close to some great fishing.

All that being said it's getting close to spawning time for the Brookies
and some people like to give them a break when they start. The guys at
Mossy usually mention it on their fishing report when it starts.
