Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Winter on the Gunpowder

Thanks for helping me out that weekend.  Looking forward to more outings…Shad season is coming!

What kind of line is recommended for shad, sink tip or full sinking?  I have a 9 foot 5 wt and thinking about overlining to a 6 wt line to get the line down faster.  Thoughts?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Lancaster Fly Fishing Show & Covid

Mark IMO there's a bunch of things to factor into this or any plan: Are you vaccinated? Boosted? Do you have any underlying health issues? Do you live with anyone who does? Have you had COVID already? How recently? Do you plan on wearing a mask? Keeping your distance?

Generally speaking, this is the best time to do something like this since March 2020.

Anyone have any suggestions as to the best place to sell  used equipment?  I have a rod and some fly lines that I would like to sell.  I have sold stuff on speypages in the past but this is not spey material.  Doesn't look like the buy/sell board on here gets much traffic.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Recommendation for best option for 3-4 night mid-May fishing and camping trip

West Virginia near Seneca Rocks. Many phenomenal trout streams within a 1-hour radius of there. That would be my personal choice.

Up further in North Central PA, Pine creek if you really want a remote stream.  There are good hikes into the pine-creek gorge.  I've fished up in that area but not camped.  There are reasonably priced fishing oriented hotels/inn's up there too.

Pine and Kettle creek come to mind, but there's a lot of water there to cover.

Don't knock the stocked water.  If you focus on C&R or delayed harvest water, the fish are good and plenty over-summer.

Plan for rain that time of year.  It's good for fishing, but not as fun for camping.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Gunpowder excursion

If it's any consolation, I was out in the general area on a different stream Sunday with my dad and we were both shut out as well. Dad had one eat from a small brown but missed it. Unfortunately I didn't remember this event was happening until I was driving over the Gunpowder and on my way to meet him at the other stream. I hope to make it to a future one, looks like a great time.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Recommendation for best option for 3-4 night mid-May fishing and camping trip

Western MD has tons of wild trout and stocked trout water (NBP, Lower Savage, Upper Savage).  There is camping all throughout the savage river state park as well as along the north branch of potomac at barnum.  Though the NBP is better floated I have always done great wading as well.

Fly fishers of the Tidal Potomac variety – we're going fishing on the Gunpowder again!  This is the same event that you have previously read about and/or attended from last September on the water with TPFR.  This was successful enough that we've decided to do it again, with a little change in the morning this time with pancakes and coffee.

The Gunpowder Fishing Day will be free form - show up, eat pancakes and drink coffee, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.  While not intended to be a casting church, If you arrive before 10 am, some casting Instructors and the other usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.   We will also have a few anglers & guides that are more knowledgeable about the Gunpowder River at the event to help folks that are new to this location or would like to improve their knowledge about this river.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.  For more information about Gunpowder Falls see the MD site.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

This gathering will follow the same guidelines for health and safety that we use for the Casting Churches and Beer Ties.   The State of Maryland nor Baltimore County have mask requirements relevant to this event. Please use your best judgment for your personal safety and that of others.  If you are ill, or suspect you might be, please rest up at home.

Thanks again for working with me on the curve cast last Sunday, Regan. Here's some tips from Ed J:

I'm hoping this technique will create fewer "wind knots" for me than overpowering the presentation portion of the cast.

Hey, Bill.

I'd love to hear from the G'power guides who might be joining us.

For what it's worth. there's plenty of room to swing a 9', and I'll be using a 4 wt so that I can cast small-fly rigs under a yarn indicator.

Best,
Owen

Come join TPFR on the Gunpowder River for a casual day of fishing.

When:     Sunday February 20th   8 am until whenever

Where:    Gunpowder Falls – Masemore Road access point - See attachment for details and directions.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Recommendation for best option for 3-4 night mid-May fishing and camping trip

Good evening,

I'm going to have 3-4 nights in mid-May where I can go fishing and camping, and am hoping for some recommendations from the group. My preference is for a remote trout stream, with camping nearby. I'm willing to drive 4 hours from the DC area, and would love some suggestions! I'm leaning towards something in PA, but have never fished the state nor have I camped there.

Thanks in advance.
