{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Park streams

I fished there on Thursday.  Fishing was decent but not many bugs.  Fish seemed a bit sluggish but I still caught plenty  on dries.

I've only fished the north river once and didn't find it to be anything worth a special drive.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fly lines for shad

Mark and Others:

Thanks for the reply.  For the first time this year I'm using a two-handed fly rod to fish for them from shore.  I have to admit that by doing some spey/roll casting (although I'm not very good at it), its nice not having to worry about my backcast.  However, I don't think my sink tip was heavy enough.  I went Thursday after work and while the spin guys around me caught fish but I got skunked.  I think my fly wasn't getting deep enought, so I'm going to try some heavier sink tips to try to get the fly down deeper in the water column.  Of course, I'm also curious to see how many more flies I lost by getting snagged.  LOL

Thanks,
Jamie Gold

I get down very deep to American shad, often missing the hickories altogether. Integrated lines are available with either floating or intermediate running sections. A 250g fast sinking head would work well in most situations. Many people have taken to calling shooting heads sink tips, but I understand that terminology refers to shorter add-ons to floating lines, 15' or less, as in trout fishing. They often work fine for hickory shad, especially later in the run.

From a boat full sink no question.  But, from the rocks I've found it difficult to find a spot where a full sink does not drape over the rocks before the deeper channel.

I keep a full sink with me, but rarely use it.

Best success and least frustration has been with either a floating line with an 8-15 foot sink tip or an intermediate with a sink 3 tip.  Slower sink especially in very slow current gives you time to work the fly.

I find alot of this, frankly, is dictated by when you fish and how many people are there.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Luray and Front Royal recommendations

Thanks for doing this important work!

It's about a half hour drive from either Luray or Front Royal, but for the last two summers, I've been loving the intimacy of the North Fork, especially Seven Bends State Park near Woodstock, which has two main access points. The smallmouth aren't huge, but the water is varied over this short stretch, and it's wadeable anytime the flow is below 500 on the Strasburg USGS gauge

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Luray and Front Royal recommendations

I've been volunteering at vaccination clinics in Luray and Front Royal.  I only volunteer a half day, and it's hard not to think about fishing when you drive over the rivers, etc.  I haven't fished the area at all.  Any advice on where to start?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Snakehead fishing near Mattawoman creek

Nope!  That's one of the best things about snakehead.  Not only have they inhabited shallow, low oxygen water where there really weren't any game opportunities in the past, but they also bite aggressively all summer long.  I will say that they are harder to catch as the summer wears on.  By August, the spatterdock and hydrilla beds are VERY thick and harder to find open holes/channels where you can pull a fly through, but you can still catch them. A falling tide will force them closer to the edges of the hydrilla and makes it slightly easier.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Four Mile Run - Flood Management

That's actually great news. I've fished four mile run a handful of times when I lived in Arlington with varied luck. It'll be nice to have a lot of deeper holes to fish in once they've completed the project.

On Mar 24, 2021, at 10:13 AM, Rob Snowhite <rob@robsnowhite.com> wrote:

I'm really looking forward to this. The Army Corps built the current itiration of Four Mile Run in the 70s after Agnes came through. Due to erosion and sand on streets in winter the area of 4MR that is designed to absorb flood water has filled in. The section between Mt. Vernon and Rte 1 will be dredged to remove sediment and allow the Army Corps to adjust the flow.

I'm sure the wildlife will be fine. There isn't much other than clams in the sediment. Otters and birds will return once the equipment is gone.  I'm looking forward to deeper water that fish will explore.

Four Mile Run flood channel maintenance agreement

The County Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Alexandria for the two jurisdictions to share maintenance costs and the dredging of the two-mile Four Mile Run flood channel, which extends from Shirlington to the Potomac River.  The channel straddles the boundary between the County and the City of Alexandria.

Maintenance of the open channel includes clearing debris, sediment and vegetation, and re-stabilizing stream banks as required by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) annual inspection program. The two jurisdictions have agreed to a 50-50 split of the costs of the dredging, which will help preserve the flood channel's capacity and reduce flood risk in neighborhoods surrounding South Four Mile Run.

The work will begin in late summer or early Fall, 2021 and take approximately four months. The Four Mile Run Levee System, a USACE flood risk management project, was completed in 1984 in response to several devastating floods in South Arlington. The Board voted unanimously to approve the agreement. To view the staff report, scroll to Item No. 26 on the agenda for the Saturday, March 20, 2021, County Board Meeting agenda.
