{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} CASTING (distance and double-hauls) - Sunday 14 May

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 14 May at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

This Church will be free form, just working on whatever people would like.

Additionally, we will work on FFI Casting Skills challenges for anyone interested.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges. This particular Sunday we are going to work on distance and double-hauls.

If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

PM me for pictures if interested.

Cheers,

Jan

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Status on the Potomac

I was there last Wednesday and caught more than 20 in 2 hours right in front of Fletchers.

The word does seem to be that the fishing is better upstream of fletchers as Robert S. said. I haven't been up that way though.

We should be entering peak time but if we don't get significant rain who knows what will happen.  The river is super low.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Status on the Potomac

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} July Bucket List Trip

We enjoyed Turneff Flats several years ago. Snorkeling was amazing, as well as good fishing.

Thanks for the input everyone! Super helpful, if only smallmouth on the Potomac were this easy to find!

I think we're leaning towards https://www.turnefferesort.com/ , based off the not strictly fishing outfit for after hours/downtime.

July in Belize is prime for our big migratory tarpon. They are showing up now. Lots of anglers chase tarpon early in the morning and then switch to permit as the sun gets higher. Some, by no means all, of the lower prized operations have  guides who are less talented and may not go as far to find fish.

Belize would be a great option.  You may find some of the lodges there will be offering summer discounts as that is not high time. Look on yellowdog, fly shop ect for those type of deals. The fishing is still great and the country is relatively cheap and safe.  Mexico would be a similar option.  Don't know much about cuba but could also be worth looking into.

Wouldn't do puerto rico if fishing is your priority.

I go to the keys more years tarpon fishing.  July is past the peak so you should have an easier time finding guides if you were to try and go in the next month or two.  My issue would be that the better guides in the keys are now asking $900 or so for a day and that doesn't include tip.  I can get a week of fishing in belize (hiring indepent guides) for what it would cost me for three days in the keys.  If you are hardcore about tarpon keys are still the place I would go, but not sure I would pick july.  Bonefish and permit fishing is better elsewhere.

I was just in Key Largo and went tarpon fishing at night. Caught a couple on the Flyrod and my son caught a whopper on spin gear. I'd be happy to share the guide's name if anyone goes down there. He was very accommodating and put us on fish all night.

Hey all,

Looking for some advice here.

I'll have about a week or two in July free and want to check some boxes, permit, tarpon and other flat wandering fish. With a week or two on the beach, with and without guides. We're thinking Belize, or Puerto Rico.

Rob Snowwhite's podcast with John Bilotta kicked this rock off the cliff.

Any advice on locations? Flies? Guides? Alterantive locations (Florida?)

Thanks in advance!
