{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dec Casting Church

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 12 Dec at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

We will help anyone with any particular casting issues.  Bring your questions. We will have some extra gear, no need to buy anything.  If you are curious about flyfishing/flycasting and are wanting to see what it is about, come on by. Dress for the weather.

We will have a casting station for those who want to begin to pursue the FFI Casting Challenges program (see FFI website). This is a fun and low-key way to improve skills and get recognized by FFI and your peers for your achievements. It is a good way to also set the stage for eventual pursuit of Casting Instructor (CI) certification, if you are interested in that pursuit.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Christmas Present Help

Just to say that the mother of the cream bead head Krystal caddis larva tells me he's not "chunky," just "big boned." 😀

On that pattern, I wouldn't get too hung up on the type of dubbing.  It looks like a fly that is meant to get down deep fast.  It looks like beside the bead it has lead wire ( or since it's Orvis, probably leadfree wire) underneath the dubbing.  I am guessing that because of the profile (and because that's what makes these nymphs successful).

If you really want to know what's going on, buy one and dissect it with a razor blade.  but I would use

Caddis hook
black thread,
tungsten bead
black thread
pearl crystal flash (ribbing)
pale dubbing (Hare's ear) for the abdomen
black dubbing with some flash in it for the collar

I have no knowledge of what Orvis uses, but there really isn't anything magical about this pattern.  It is just a bead head nymph with a light abdomen, dark collar and Krystal Flash rib.  The stock photo looks a bit chunky which makes me think it has extra weight underneath the dubbing.

Small stream trout fishing, there will be an option of fishing Big Hunting Creek and Owens Creek. Both are catch and release streams. You will need to have a valid Maryland fishing license and trout stamp.

If there is interest after fishing we can head to Dan's Restaurant and Tap room for a brew and a bite to eat.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Near Disneyworld fishing(catching) option

I took 2 8 wts with me, and they were fine, could have used a lighter rod for the smaller fish.  I'd recommend a sink tip or intermediate line or take a couple of weighted flys that will get down 5-7 feet if its cooler and you do a slow retrieve.

I did all fly fishing, but spinning gear works as well.  Their mouths are so abrasive that you need to retie every cast if they get to the leader (a few were lip hooks, but because we were slow stripping, others inhaled it deeper.

It was a great experience, Christina and Mike were super guides.  If you are short on time or want to be sure you catch some fish, check it out.  You can also do as an individual versus having to have a partner along.    They also have bass (largemouth and peacocks) available.

I have fished it several times this fall.  i had one good day and the others have been zeros despite seemingly being the right tide/time of day.  Typical gravelly.

I've had a lot of fun with guides in Central PA near Carlisle (I like to stay in AirBNB's or hotels in State College). Dom Swentovsky (Troutbitten.com) is a personal favorite, but if you fish with Dom, you will fish hard and my idea of a good fishing day ends in exhaustion. If you call up a fly shop near where you want to go they can usually set you up with a guide and they will get you on fish. Just be sure to clearly state what you want out of the trip (learning to cast, many fish, big fish, etc.)

Any suggestions on places to take him, and specifically guides that can help him avoid all my bad habits? I heard somewhere that Carlisle PA was an option, but I've never been. Maybe Mossy Creek?

He got some crap news recently, so I'd love to take give him a day off sometime soon if possible.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} $250.00 Deposit Towards - Troutbitten Fly Fishing Trip Nov. 15th Need to Know By Tomorrow Nov. 11th

Hello TPFR Folks
I have a reservation to fish with Domenick Swentosky of Troutbitten.  I can't go for family health reasons. I need to find a substitute for Monday Nov 15th (would need to get there Sunday Night - State College PA) or forfeit the trip altogether. I put down a despot of $250.00. The balance that is owed $300.00 plus tip. Domenick specializes in tightline nymph fishing with a Mono Rig. Anyway if someone can use my spot AND come up with the balance plus a tip let me know and we can organize it with Domenick. Sorry for the short notice. I will gladly give my $250.00 to you and a friend to go fish.

Please let me know ASAP.  I have to let Domenick know by tomorrow evening.

No harm, no foul, Feder.  😊   I just received a copy of Labash's 2010 book, Fly Fishing with Darth Vader.

Guess who wrote the Introduction.  Hint: it's not the Canadian band of American Woman fame.

I'll have it with me tonight.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Casting Church - Sun 14 Nov

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 14 Nov at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

We will help anyone with any particular casting issues.  Bring your questions. We will have some extra gear, no need to buy anything.  If you are curious about flyfishing/flycasting and are wanting to see what it is about, come on by.

Regan

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Beer tie - Monday night, 8 Nov

Well this one of those strange months where we have two Mondays before having two Sundays, and thus we are having our Beer tie before having our Casting Church.

Agenda:
Socializing
Telling fishing stories (and lies)
Fly tying
Eating and some beer drinking

The address is  2800 Clarendon Blvd #850, Arlington, VA 22201
We will be in the upstairs location at the grill. The grill is right across Clarendon Blvd from the Orvis store. There is a parking garage right next door on North Fillmore St.

Covid safety: Recognize that we are in a social situation, and many will be eating and drinking, and so many will be unmasked. Right now, there is no requirement by Colony Grill or Virginia to be masked. However, if you are ill or suspect you might be, please respect the health of others and rest up at home. The Beer Ties are monthly so there will be other opportunities to participate.
