RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Accotink Creek

Nope, it wasn't me out there, I always fish on weekdays.

I find these trout still have feeding habits from the hatchery. On certain hours they hit really well and certain hours they just shut down. In my experience with flies for the Accotink trout is that anything that you offer, they will hit if it's the right size. I fish with #6 or 8 Beedhead woollybuggers, color in black or olive most of times and works great!

Tight Lines,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rappahannock is fishing well

I went to the Rappahannock with a friend today.

We started below the Route 1 bridge.  My friend caught an 18.5" striper.  That is all we caught in that location.

We moved to an area above the bridge.  I caught 6 shad.  My friend caught 1.  I also hooked a few and lost them.

There was someone else fishing in the area.  He must have caught 30 or more during the time we were there.

Right now the river if flowing perfectly, clear, and it is fishing well.  Get out there while you can!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smith Mountain Lake Info?

That will suit most of your needs out there just fine. Unless we're crossing some of the big water or putting out 8 or 10 planer boards with live alewives/shad, I could do all my fishing out there from a SUP board. Unfortunately, I don't have a SUP board. Yet.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: POTOMAC SHAD UPDATE??

Jeff: I suppose that's entirely possible, but I didn't get a good look at it. I'm guessing a carp.  I've seen photos here and elsewhere of big fish in the Potomac, so I guess I should not have been so surprised.  Spotting critters helps make fishing worthwhile for me.  I got my canoe into Burke Lake one evening late last week and was completely skunked (as has been my usual experience there) but I saw beavers, all kinds of waterfowl, and a gorgeous moon which helped me feel blessed instead of just unlucky. Plus I didn't capsize, drown, get a popping bug through my ear, or wreck my trailer in the dark.  :-)

I can't predict the future but I think an excellent chance there will be shad in the river this weekend -- have at it!

I skulked out from work a little early yesterday afternoon and in short order was on shore casting from the rocks about a .25 mile above Fletchers. It was a great time; I caught only four, not a gazillion like others, but it was a sight to behold! They are leaping out of the water and bigger fish are chasing them. Besides the usual mallards and geese the area around the river is lousy with cormorants (no doubt eating the fish), and I also saw a bald eagle, ospreys, blue herons, and an owl being chased around by some sparrows.  Weirdly, a fish at least 2.5 feet long leaped up like a breaching whale about 20 feet away from me, doing what I'm not sure -- it was not  a striper or a snakehead, had a yellowish color - maybe a huge carp?  Cat?  I've never seen them do that before.

There were probably a hundred fishermen out and about but they are spread out all over so I did not feel crowded.  In retrospect I think I might have caught more had I been more patient to let the line get down deeper. I'd count to 10 or 15, maybe 30 or 40 seconds would have been the trick... dunno. I do know I wound up losing every shad fly I had over the space of 3 hours hanging up on the rocks--hence my reluctance to wait too long before retrieving--so be sure to bring a bunch of them. A few weeks ago pink did the trick for me, yesterday all my fish were caught on clousers and shad flies with a lot of chartruese in them. Good luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: POTOMAC SHAD UPDATE??

I saw a LARGE goldfish/koi leaping through the outflow at 4MR this past weekend as if it were a salmon. Perhaps it was one of those?

Good luck!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Project Healing Waters 2 Fly Tournament

I have to second everything you wrote except I might add that "inspiring" and "incredible" are understatements to some of things I heard and saw this weekend as a volunteer stream monitor.  As an example, I saw a disabled vet with one arm tie on a two-fly rig (with no assistance) and then proceed to fish what I thought was the most technical part of the Rose River like he was shooting fish in a barrel.  This part of the river had been skunking some of the better fishermen for four or five hours.

Project Healing Waters is truly a worthy cause and I enjoyed every moment of a long Sunday on the Rose River even with an afternoon rain shower that tried to put a damper on things.  I encourage everyone to check out the link Jim posted below.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smith Mountain Lake Info?

That's Bernard's Landing. My folks are directly across the lake from the other side of the peninsula you'll be on, so you picked an area I actually frequent. A boat would be preferable (a canoe will do), but you'll find LMB and tons of perch where you are anyway. I've also shot my fair share of geese off the point of the peninsula you're on, but that season is a long way off right now.

The rip-rapped shoreline you're on holds bass, especially around the points there. Go for clousers and other baitfish patterns in the 3-6" range. They don't need to be really heavy because right below the rip rap is a decently gentle slope (which you could probably wade). Also try throwing things like gurglers, poppers, and crease flies in the same spots at night.

Walk across the peninsula and I've found good fish around the resort's docks in the evening and early morning and also at night. If you can fish there (and I don't know if you can without a boat of some kind), the next cove north of the resort is where SML Yacht Club is located and I have caught LOTS of big striper there. If you can rent a canoe or kayak, sit out in the middle of the Yacht Club cove around 11PM and drop a big (6-8") rattle trap down until it hits the bottom, then jig it up and down a foot or two, bouncing it off the bottom. Do this for about an hour and you'll catch at least a 24" fish. This is where my buddies and I go after waking up from a post-day-drinking nap. Great spot. You could probably also do it from the Bernard's Landing marina cove or even off the end of the dock at the end of Clubhouse Towers Dr., but I've had the best luck at the Yacht Club or across the lake in the middle of Parkway Marina's cove. The key is to be down at about 20'. If the weather hasn't reached into the mid-to-upper 80's yet or if the water is still 65-75 degrees, you will find striper on baitfish patterns around long, tapering points. SML striper are generally a lot bigger than the schoolies I see folks catching up here, so be gentle with that 6wt! I usually fish an 8 or 9. A leader about 5ft long built on 40-30-25 mono is what I mostly use, whether I'm using a sink tip for baitfish patterns or topwater.

Really early in the morning or just after dusk, look into the backs of coves. If you see some commotion, it is a good bet that some striper are chasing a bait ball. Cast past the ball and strip right on through, short and jerky.

If you're decidedly not doing the boat thing, the state park is a good spot for LMB as well - it will be maybe a 10-15min drive from you. But whatever you do, if you go out in a boat at night, take a GPS. It is a confusing body of water, especially when it is dark out.

And just for confirmation, the bite is definitely on right now for LMB. My mom texted me a picture of what was probably a 4lb LMB she caught on Saturday, sunning itself in the shallows by a dock piling. Sandy bottom, mid-day, on a Rapala fly.

Note: I deleted my last post to note the depth to fish for striper at.

It is probably too late for any top-water striper action there, but the "deeper" (as in, longer fingers, not deeper water) coves, such as the one you're on, will give a decent top-water striper bite mid-March to mid-April.

If you're decidedly not doing the boat thing, the state park is a good spot for LMB as well - it will be maybe a 10-15min drive from you.

Similar to a Dahlberg Diver but the collar is not cut like a diver.  The slanted collar behind the head of the Dahlberg creates the Dive when you strip the line in.  Another similar fly is called a Cougar - does not have the slanted collar.  But everyone ties them a bit different, their own version.

Dahlbergs are great bass flys!

Dahlbergs are great bass flys!

Can anyone tell me the "official" name of this fly?  Thanks in advance!
