{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} NCC-TU Shad Night Set for February 22

It's time to get ready for shad! Our annual Shad Night event returns in a few weeks. Join us for a Zoom webinar on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:30 pm. Login information will be posted soon. Read more about the event here

Our featured guests are biologists with Maryland DNR responsible for shad and river herring, and improving fish passage. There should be good information about shad runs across the state. We will also recall some of the amazing stories from last year on the Potomac, and one special catch fifty years ago.

If you are new to the area, welcome! We hope to get together in person again next year and will see you on the river very soon.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Raft access for Shad?

You can just push your raft in at Fletchers where people put their kayaks in or pay use their ramp. I have a Flycraft but I end up just using the rowboats because it's so much easier to have them deal with the logistics (other than pulling my electric outboard on and off).

A buddy and I have a Stealthcraft Hooligan XL raft  and I was hoping to use it to get out there, but I know access is limited.  We plan to put an e-propulsion outboard on it soon, but I would love to avoid the long, slow ferry up river from Gravelly point if possible.

Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Hershey/Harrisburg Fly fishing

Hi all,

Anyone going to the NRA Great Outdoor Show in February?

Heading up with the wife to check out the show on the 2/10 weekend and I'm hoping to squeeze in a few hours of fishing one of the mornings. We'll be staying right off the Susquehanna in Mount Joy.

Does anyone have recommendations?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} NW Branch delayed harvest trout area

I also live very close to the NW branch in Wheaton. I believe the stream is governed by simple put and take regulations with a limited closure for a week in March at the start of stocking season. But maybe the regs are changing for this year.

In my experience over the past 2 years, it gets fished out pretty quickly after stocking. And there are definitely no holdovers, the water gets too warm in the summer for trout to survive.

Just saw a posting from 2022 while walking along the NW branch about a delayed harvest put-and-take trout area/no fishing zone-has anyone else heard about or seen this?

Yes, it shows on the DNR Trout stocking map that it was stocked 4/22.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: CASTING CHURCH - Sun 8 Jan

Nope--it's only required to become a member if you want the FFI pin upon successful completion.

Here is the revised list with descriptions. My thanks to Scott Allen for catching that I was using an older version:

Bronze level skills are as follows:

B1. 35 ft. Pick Up and Lay Down (PULD) Cast, Dominant Side Starting with the fly at 35 ft. the angler will do a PULD cast in a nearly vertical plane (no false casting or hauling) returning the fly to within 2 ft. of the center of the 35 ft. target.

B2. 35 ft. PULD Cast, Non-Dominant Side Starting with the fly at 35 ft. the angler will do a PULD cast with the rod tip and line traveling over the non-dominant shoulder, (no false casting or hauling) returning the fly to within 2 ft. of the center of the 35 ft. target.

B3. 35 ft. Horizontal PULD Cast Starting with the fly at 35 ft. the angler will perform a PULD in a nearly horizontal plane (no higher than 2 o'clock) with the fly landing within 4 ft. of either side of the tape. The leader must not pile but may be curved. (No false casting or hauling)

B4. Shooting Line to 40 ft. Starting with the fly at 40 ft. the angler will strip the fly back to 35 ft. The angler will cast and shoot the line to 40 ft. No more than 3 false casts are allowed but slipping/shooting line is only allowed on delivery. The fly must land within 2 ft. of a 40 ft. target.

B5. Accuracy to 25 and 35 ft. Targets Starting with the fly at 40 ft. the angler strips the fly to approximately 20 ft. The angler must now achieve targets at 25 ft. and 35 ft. on the tape. The line will be lengthened during false casting between targets. The fly must land within 2 feet of the center of the target. If a target is missed the angler picks up where the fly has landed and tries again but has only 3 tries for each target. Angler must achieve both targets. No hauling.

B6. Minimum 35 ft. Roll Cast, Dominant Side Starting with the fly at 35 ft. or more, the angler will perform a roll cast with line/leader landing relatively straight and within 2 ft. of either side of the tape. The D loop (back loop) should be formed by slowly dragging the line into position such that the fly and leader do not leave the water surface or grass. A roll cast tool is suggested if performed on grass or indoors. No hauling.

B7. Distance to 50+ ft. Starting with the fly at about 55 ft. the angler will strip the fly back to 35 ft. A cast is made to 50 ft. or more with the fly landing within 4 ft. of either side of the tape and leader relatively straight. False casting, hauling, and shooting are allowed.

Owen,
I think you may have mixed up some your reference material. The Bronze level tasks are done at 35 feet.

B1. 35 ft. Pick Up and Lay Down (PULD) Cast, Dominant Side
B2. 35 ft. PULD Cast, Non-Dominant Side
B3. 35 ft. Horizontal PULD Cast
B4. Shooting Line to 40 ft.
B5. Accuracy to 25 and 35 ft. TargetsB6. Minimum 35 ft. Roll Cast, Dominant Side
B7. Distance to 50+ ft.

Hauling is only allowed for B7.

For those interested in pursuing the Bronze Level of the FFI Casting Skill Challenge, I'll bring the measuring tape and cone targets and will be happy to work with you:

BRONZE FLY CASTING SKILL LEVEL

The Bronze Level is focused on developing or reinforcing solid beginning fly casting skills. A fly fisher with this level of proficiency can successfully fish many common fishing situations.

The Bronze Level challenges are as follows:

B1. Pick-Up and Lay-Down cast (PULD): This cast is fundamental to all fly casting. Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster can perform a PULD cast in a near vertical plane with leader straightening to within 2 ft. of the 40 ft. target center. No hauling or false casting allowed.

B2. Vertical to Horizontal Casting: Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster picks up in a near vertical plane (1 o'clock), makes a series of 2-4 false casts moving down to a near horizontal plane (3 o'clock), and delivers the fly with leader straightening at 40 feet within 4 ft. of either side of the tape. Nearly horizontal means that the fly would travel and land under an obstacle approximately 4 ft. above the surface. No hauling allowed.

B3. Roll Cast, Dominant Side: The roll cast is a very useful cast for removing slack in the line or when there is limited backcast space. Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster will perform a 40 ft. roll cast on the dominant shoulder (right shoulder for a right-handed person) with the leader straightening to within 2 ft. of the 40 ft. target center. A roll cast tool (artificial anchor) may be used if performed on grass at participant's discretion. The D loop (the back loop) should be established by slowly dragging the line into position such that the fly and leader do not leave the water surface or grass.

B4. Roll Cast, Non-Dominant Side: This cast is often used in situations where there are obstacles or the wind is blowing in from the dominant side. Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster will perform 40 ft. roll cast on the non-dominant shoulder (left shoulder for a right-handed person with rod held in right hand) with the leader straightening to within 2 ft. of the 40 ft. target center. A roll cast tool (artificial anchor) may be used if performed on grass at participant's discretion. The D loop (the back loop) should be established by slowly dragging the line into position on the non-dominant side of the body such that the fly and leader do not leave the water surface or grass.

B5. Shooting Line: This technique is fundamental to extending line when casting. Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster will strip 5-10 feet of fly line off the reel. A pick-up and lay-down cast will be performed with shooting line to 45 ft. or more on delivery with the fly landing within 4 ft. of either side of the tape. No false casting; hauling is allowed.

B6. Accuracy: Caster will extend the fly to 45 ft. and then strip line in so that approximately 4 ft. of fly line (4 ft. of fly line plus the leader) is beyond the rod tip. Casts are made off the dominant shoulder (right shoulder for a right-handed caster) to the 20, 30, and then 40-foot targets in sequence with a potential of 3 tries at each target. The fly must land within 2 ft. of the target center. In the event of a miss, the caster picks up where the fly landed and tries again at the same target for up to two more attempts (3 in total). Once the first target is achieved or 3 attempts exhausted, the caster will pick up and false cast while lengthening line to the next targets. Two (2) of three (3) targets must be achieved, with one being at 40 ft. False casting, shooting line, and hauling are allowed.

B7. Distance: Starting with the fly at 40 ft., the caster will achieve a distance of 50 ft. or beyond with the fly landing beyond the line tip and within 4 ft. of either side of the measuring tape within 3 attempts. Second and third attempts, if needed, can be started from any point. Hauling and unlimited false casts are allowed. Second and third attempts, if needed, can be started from any point.

Best,
Owen

Additionally, we will work on FFI Casting Skills challenges for anyone interested.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges, particularly for shad.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.
