{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Good day at the Accotink Creek

So the stockers eat woolly buggers, overwinter, and then still hit on woolly buggers again in the spring.  Interesting. Naive fish?

Did you notice any other species becoming active (fish I mean, I've seen plenty of turtles, spring migrants, and heard several Ranid/Hylid species)?  I jog the stream trail around the lake 4-5 days a week and have seen a couple of dead sunfish floating by, but not much else.  I've already found some good canoe spots I'd like to play around with when the water temp warms up a bit more.

Good pictures Todd -- I don't know if they beat the pics Beth took of some squirrels attempting sexual reproduction on the same stream, but they're certainly a touch more classy.

Bob and I were out this afternoon to see if the boats still float before Fletcher's officially opens for the season.  We anchored mid-cove, well inside of the main edge of current.  Many early season hickories have been caught in this slack water.  About 10 minutes of casting went by when I heard a confused noise come from behind me and I saw Bob's rod tip bouncing out of the corner of my eye.  It seemed to take him forever, but eventually he realized and exclaimed, "it's a fish!".  As he fought it I congratulated him on the first shad and told him not to lose it.  It jumped off at the boat.  I was still in the running.  Ten minutes later he was fighting yet another hickory and managed to land it this time.  The shad run has finally begun.

Fletcher's will be opening for the season tomorrow at 7am.  The water is cold and murky, the weather looks like crap, but apparently there are a few fish around.  I plan on letting boats out in the morning but if the wind becomes too much I may have to cut it midday.  Fair warning.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: What are the spey guys throwing on the Potomac?

The past two years I have used a 12' 6" 6/7 weight with 450-475 skagit heads. This year I am EXCITED to try a 450 grain Skagit iFlight which has an intermediate line for 2/3 of the head. For tips I use 12-15 feet of T-8 or T-11. I tried 18 feet of T-8 and that was a shit show. I agree with John that throwing heavier tips (T-14 & T-17) will make the fishing much less fun. Those tips are also not really likely to get you in terms of added depth until the end of the swing in the slack water when they will drop like a stone and hang you up.

What I would suggest; however, is adding split shot to your line. In fact, this year I am going to experiment with 1/16 oz and 1/8 oz worm weights in the middle of my leader held in place with a blood knot or (gasp) a swivel. 2 feet of 20 lb test - weight - knot - 2 feet of 8-12 lb test. The split shot have a tendency to pop off.

It is also true that the fishing very much depends on the conditions. I have had shad take the fly mid swing on a quarter down cast (FUN). I have also had to throw quarter upstream and mend and mend and mend to get the fly in the zone (also fun). Fortunately, with shad there is no ambiguity as to when you are in the zone!

This year I am also going to try an 11' 6 weight with a 425 grain Skagit iFlight with 10 - 12 feet of T-8 or T-11. Perhaps when the water warms up.

13' 7 wt rod (Echo TR)
510 grain skagit head
I am going to start with 10 feet of T-14.  I suspect that may not be enough but who knows.  Do any of the local shops sell T-17?  I see RIO sells extra heavy MOW Tips in T-17 that comes in lengths up to 12.5 feet.  Anyone have any experience with those?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: What are the spey guys throwing on the Potomac?

I used both T-11 and T-14 last year on my Deathstar, used the T-11 more as the T-14 would get hung up more at the end of the swing and the T-11 was catching fish. I did not use polyleaders but I will have them with me I just keep changing going heavier until it starts working or I start hooking fish. I also will adjust the fishing by casting more across and throwing a number of mends to get the fly down, most of the fish are on the edge of the current or toward the end of the swing. I have used T-14 on the 6wt out in BC it is not as much fun but is doable, So I will probably use T-8 & 11 and sinking polyleaders. Just try different things, it can also very depending on where on the river you are, current, conditions (high or low water), temperature, etc.

I caught one brookie on Saturday on the Rose.  He took a large stonefly nymph.  I only had one take on a dry fly.  Water levels are great but it was bitterly cold Saturday; spring retreated for the day.

Jon, have you tried polykeaders on the Potomac? I typically use polyleaders with a scandi head when great lakes steel heading but can't see them getting down on the Potomac. Even t11 seems light to me. Like I said in my orig post I was thinking t14 but not sure if that will even be enough.

I will set up my 6 wt with a 375-400 grain Skagit line and then use either sinking polyleaders or T-11 tips to get down, hopefully that will do the trick.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Holmes Run Revisited

There was a re-stocking on February 12, but not as many as in November.

In addition, turns out that the cause of the fish kill was the chlorine that hit the stream when the water main up on Columbia Pike broke.  Trout don't like chlorinated water, and it did them in really quick.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: What are the spey guys throwing on the Potomac?

My rod of choice is a 10'8" 5wt Batson Rainshadow Switch with a 290gr Wulff Ambush line, 15' of T-8, and around 4-5ft of 10lb tippet to the first fly.  Setup works great swinging for smallies and trout as well.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Papua New Guinea Black Bass

It's great that there is a post about New Guinea bass.  A lot of the fish down there are caught on flies below the surface.  Everyone who has caught one says its the hardest pulling fish in fresh water bar none.  Lefty Krey backed this up saying it the toughest fish pound for pound there is.

Below is a link of Rod Harrison catching a 20 pounder on fly in the 80's.  Rod is the guy who introduced the black bass to Lefty Krey.

Sharing this for all kinds of reasons. The guy's casting skill. The exotic location and awesome species. And definitely take note of his teasing abilities with a topwater lure.

Two questions come to mind. Does anyone know of a fly with a "walk the dog" action? And has anyone ever fished for this species? I believe Lefty Kreh talks about fishing for these fish in his "50 species" book. I recall he spoke highly of their fighting ability, and the video bears that out.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Holmes Run Revisited

Well all I can tell you is that the last time it was stocked was November 7th. But as you recall there was a high water sewage spill event since then. And when that happens they have to dump chemicals into the stream to disinfect it. When it happened last year they didn't restock the stream and there was nothing in there. Odds are not good, in other words, that there is any improvement.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Holmes Run Revisited

I know there were some issues with this in early January. Have there been any improvements?

Check a topo map for Catocrins above BHC. If you see a blue line in public land, fish it. Watch for bears.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Big Hunting Creek and Gunpowder Falls reports?

Hey Andrew,

I know brookie water is a sacred and protected topic. Big Hunting is my closest trout water and have never found/fished brookie streams in that area. Not asking for spots but a general direction to explore. I usually hit lower/canyon section of BH ...... are the blue lines you hit tribs that flow into BH?  Catoctin Mtn Park ..... Cunningham Falls State Park?

Thanks for any and all help.

With the high cold water, I've been fishing small native brook trout streams near big hunting creek for  to good effect. These have been running quite cool and surprisingly clear (36-40 deg), with patches of snow still on the ground in some areas (shaded canyons ) as of Sunday. I scoped out big/little hunting creek, and fishing creek ( closed) and these all looked borderline fishable with water levels dropping. It may that these freestone streams seem super  "low" to my eye for much of the year.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The early bird

Dan, thanks for clearing this up and for sharing the beautiful photo.  Shad are working their way north with the weather--David Policansky just emailed yesterday that the Roanoke River in NC is "loaded with hickories."  Any day now for the Potomac.

Mike, Bob, Dalton, Alex, et. al. can relax and keep trying for number one.  I know I will.  We might have to bring in Price Waterhouse to certify the results.

I'd still like to use your photo; is that OK?  The NCC-TU Shad Report is available to anyone by email.  Send your address to contact@ncc-tu.org, with "SHAD" in the subject line or contact me.  We are well over 1000 subscribers now.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} What are the spey guys throwing on the Potomac?

I fish a skagit with usually with a 12' T11 tip. Grain weight depends on the rod.
A 5-7 wt two handed rod is perfect, lighter is better for shad, but fish whatever you have.
