{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} The Luke paper mill will be closed by June 30

Bad for the 675 losing jobs, good for the water quality of the Potomac River

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Homicide at Chain Bridge

That's terrible. Perhaps there will be a follow up story on the lack of enforcement of fishing regs and littering laws too.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} fishing with kids this weekend

I learned how to fish on the C&O Canal with worms. Go to Great Falls MD side and hike down. Sunnies, rock bass, largemouth, etc.

Typo : damn autocorrect meant to say there  still should be some trout in both lakes (  Lake Artemesia  and Greenbelt Lake )

is just the right ticket. On the Maryland side Lake Artemesia in College Park, Maryland  or just down the road Greenbelt Lake in Greenbelt.  There are Bluegills and Bass in both lakes  ( what you're actually just large ponds ) also both lake are usually stocked with trout in the spring and you're still should be some in both of the lakes. There lots of easy Shoreline access on both lakes as well. No matter where you wind up going make sure thoroughly check your kids for ticks afterwards.
Maybe  Lake Burke on the Virginia side

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Homicide at Chain Bridge

The title of this post should probably have said "Body Found at Chain Bridge." Big assumption that the murder occurred there (still a lot of details missing). Sad story, and a little scary for those of us who frequent that area during the shad run.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} NCC-TU Shad Report No. 4

The latest Shad Report from Thursday looks back to some fine fishing before the high water. Turbidity levels are dropping at Fletchers Cove but may fluctuate from recent rain. Even with stronger flow, this week should be good and boats will be available.

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} [off-topic] Crabbing with kids?

I've been crabbing in Bethany, Del for years. Frozen chicken necks are the best way to go. We've wrapped string around them, but some fishing stores now sell some type of apparatus to hold the necks in-place. If it's deep water or heavy current, add a little weight. Set the lines close to the pilings. If they're crabs, you'll be on'em rather quickly.

When the lines start moving, slowly retrieve to surface and have a "skilled" net-man at the ready. A good bucket is also advisable.

Loads of fun with kids. Enjoy!

I was on the river Wednesday night through Thursday morning, and it was a waste of time.
I have an 18 foot fiberglass fish-n-ski boat with a 150 HP outboard, and had my life vest on the whole time.  The water was muddy brown, and the current was very swift.
Up by and past the Chain Bridge the water had waves a white-water like rapids.  I had to go to about 3/4 throttle just to make headway, and after checking it out, I carefully turned the boat, and road the current back out of there.

I definitely would not recommend taking out any type of small, potentially tippy human powered boat, or even something with a small electric or gas motor.  I don't feel it would be safe.

Thanks, everyone!  Good to know.  I might target them at some point so I can add to my lifelist.  If anyone knows what flies would work for herring and quillback, I'd love to hear about them!

The duck pond is just another name for Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary, on the west side of the George Washington Memorial Parkway near Reagan National airport. It has a number of species including largemouth bass, snakeheads, carp and catfish.

I have fished it both on foot and from the canoe. If you're on foot, I'd suggest keeping to the south end of the pond -  between the airport exit and the channel that passes under the parkway.

Park in the lot for the Waterfowl Sanctuary (aka the lot that is full of cars for hire waiting to pick people up at the airport) and walk along the parkway on the small bridge over the channel. You can either follow the path around to the water and get in there or keep walking along the parkway and get in at the southern end of the pond.

As for the canoe, there's a small access point along the edge of the pond at the north end of the parking lot.

Good luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Duck Pond and river conditions

It also gets muddy. But it can still fish well when it's muddy!

When the rains come, the river muddies, and the water level rises -- e.g., to more than 5 feet on the Little Falls gauge -- is the Duck Pond still fishable or does it get muddy too?

Kinda late notice, but I'm getting out of work early and plan to be at Fletcher's around 2:30PM today. If anyone wants to meet up and fish, let me know.

I'll bring a couple rods with sinking line and plenty of flies, feel free to use my gear if you don't have any.

Shoot me a text (336-971-8468) or e-mail if you're interested.

It is hard to believe that TPFR is turning 10 years old next week. I suppose time flies when you are having fun!!

In celebration of our TPFR's 10 year anniversary we will holding a pair of events. First is a 10 year anniversary casting church on Sunday, April 7th...please see post from Art Noglak... and also we will be having a celebration at our regularly scheduled beer tie on Monday, April 8th. We will be raffling of a giant box of Potomac flies. When I say giant I mean like 6-7 dozen flies that should last a couple of seasons at least. Also we will be raffling off an Orvis Recon 9 foot 7 weight....perfect for all your Tidal Potomac needs. We will have a few other items as well, but those are the big ones.

Dan Davala, TPFR founder will be in attendance as well as all the other club officers. Rob Snowhite will be conducting our shadness madness tying! Whip up a few patterns for the run, enter to win some great prizes and come out and celebrate 10 years with us!

I almost forgot...we will have cake!
