{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Trout Fishing on the Yellow-Breeches

TU's On the Rise did an episode recently featuring Tom on the Yellow Breeches.

I watched it on TV but can't find it online.

Did Tom help you with Czech nymphing?

Cheers, TSH

All,

I just returned from a trip to Belize which I enjoyed. We caught a ton of bonefish. A few folks on the trip caught tarpon or permit, but no one achieved the Gran Slam. (Although a gentlemen in the previous group at El Pescador did get the GS the day we arrived.)

A few pictures are attached. Few notes from the trip:

-- We stayed at El Pescador, on Ambergris Cay. The first couple pictures show the ocean from the small plane we took from Belize City to San Pedro, near Ambergris Cay.

-- The guides really knew their way around the Cay and surrounding islands. If we wanted to search for tarpon, they found 'em.

-- We caught plenty of bonefish. In general, they were more plentiful, but smaller, than the ones in the Bahamas -- one to three pounds. But they still put up a solid fight.

-- Several tarpon were hooked by people in the group, but only 2-3 landed.

-- Few permit were hooked, and only two were landed. Yours truly did not hook or land a tarpon or permit. I need to massively improve my casting skills before going after them again.

Of course, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Best,
Russell Smith

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin Fly Fishing

Matt,
There is no rules set in stone for changing flies.  When I would guide I would often look at the water, the conditions, and the area I am covering to make that determination.

Say I am fishing an area with current, large rocks, and medium depth on a smallmouth stream.  I may start by fishing the same streamer that I used near the head of the pool.  I know that this water SHOULD hold fish so if I don't get a bite I may switch flies to another pattern.  If nothing bites that I will switch again quickly.

I also let the water dictate what I fish with.  For example, if I am in areas where the fish may be feeding on chub minnows I will throw a Shenk's White Streamer.  If I am fishing an area where there are crayfish I may switch patterns.  This is not a hard fast rule though and sometimes I will change up to different patterns quickly if nothing is biting.

You may also try switching colors if you are not catching fish but believe that fish are holding that area.  You may also try some poppers near the edges of cover in an attempt to get a hit or a fish.  It may be a blue gill but it breaks the ice!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tidal Basin Fly Fishing

Hi Everyone,

Went out to the Tidal Basin earlier today, on what was a beautiful morning after that crazy storm last night. I'm pretty new to the sport, and while my ambition and enthusiasm keep me going, this was my 3rd trip out without a bite. I hit the area down by the Ohio Dr. bridge with some Wooly Buggers and a Clouser Minnow, between about 6:45 and 9 am. I saw a few big fish splashing around... so I was encouraged to keep trying.

I suppose my main questions are: A.) how often should you change a fly if you're not getting a response? and B.) how long should one fish the same spot before moving?

I realize both of these could be a question of patience as well, some wisdom would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone.

Matt

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} SHENANDOAH RIVER RODEO COMING UP - SATURDAY JULY 14!!!!!

All:

Dan was kind enough to forward the link for the Shenandoah River Rodeo.  I want all to know this is a great event.  Guides donate a day float and fisherman sign up to compete in the rodeo.  The 250 fee per fisherman includes the float, all festivities, camping fees, bbq, bands and banter galore.

Our group camps Friday night, we rise to compete in the rodeo on Saturday, We drift with some of the finest guides in the region, we throw flies, other guys/gals spin.  We all love it. we returm to camp, eat, drink, win a raffle prize or not.  We trade stories and make new fishing friends.   Sunday we eat a great camp breakfast, drink strong coffee and reluctantly leave the adventure.

Smallies are the primary target, large mouth cost you penalty points (I proudly take the penalty), redeye bass deliver bonus points!

You will meet great guides, fish, eat, drink with them.  You will fish with great fisherman and learn a trick or two, they too will learn, that is what makes them great, and that is what makes fishing magical; there is always more to learn.

To some it is a man's weekend, others bring wives or dates, familes are there.  All are welcome and it all makes for a great weekend!  Best of all it supports the Shenandoah and Potomac riverkeepers, great people doing great work!

if you can't swing the rodeo come for the festivities.  Feel free to sidebar with me if you want details.

See you on the "doah"

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Hawaiian O'io

I know a couple of the members have had a chance to target the O'io (bonefish) on Oahu and wanted to share an update with everyone.  I've been able to get out on Rat Island and the Triangle Reef by the airport on two separate occasions and have fished Kawaikui Beach park a few times.  We've only managed to hook two bonefish, landing zero.  Had a big one rip out 200 yds before it broke off on the coral heads out by the surf and another break off on bad line management (line wrapped around the reel handle).

We've been going out on good tides and have been able to see lots of tailing fish.  Our first trip to Rat Island was great.  I was out with Jim Nix (member) and my brother.  We got there on the low tide at about 6:00 AM and as soon as we got on the reef we started seeing tails all over.  After about 45 minutes the tails disappeared and then we went on the hunt.  We saw a handful of fish and took a few shots with no interest.  The evening low tide turned the fish on an we saw a ton fish tailing.  It was a real treat for my brother who's never been bonefishing to see the amount of fish that we saw.  He got the thrill of casting to tails and I know that he probably still sees them when he closes his eyes at night.

On a trip out to Triangle Reef we spent the morning spotting tails.  Not a lot of sun until late morning which made things difficult.  My eyes and senses were really tested and was able to start picking out fish that were leaving wakes.  Later in the morning we sight fished the edges and did some blind casting into the deep water and picked up a Popio (small trevally).  After lunch we paddled over to Rat Island and got into some fish.  Stood in a spot where the fish were following the tide in and got one to eat.  Pretty cool see these fish pick up your fly and take off.  It was a short lived fight as my line got wrapped...For you kayak guys out there we had to paddle back head on into some serious trade winds.  Probably two footers in the channel and constantly getting soaked.  Good times!  On a side note we saw a 6 foot Black Tip shark cruising the reef.

The latest outing was last night with a buddy of mine.  We went out on a falling tide with gusting winds and lots of clouds and some rain.  Sight fishing was difficult and even when the sun did peek out it was at an angle where the best view was directly into the wind...We were fortunate to see some tails and put some casts on them but not luck.  I got a little barracuda to take the fly blind casting and my buddy hooked a large bone blind casting with a Chilli Pepper into some deeper water.

Overall, we've had plenty of chances but our hookup ratio is not great.  It's grind out here but lots of fun in a beautiful place.  Got a couple more weeks to go in hopes of catching a monster.  Might get out in the morning as the tide looks pretty good.  I've attached a few pictures.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: gravelly

I was going to head out there early in the morning tomorrow since I live 10 minutes away and before it gets too hot. Are you all on the Potomac side or are you fishing the channel between the park and the airport? I haven't not fished that area before. Thanks.

That was priceless about the guy going after his boat.

As far as the Occoquan, there is construction going on in the back area of it so it is muddy in the back end of the river.  It is yielding nothing....zip!  Not even a bluegill.
