{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Is anyone else going to the Lancster show tomorrow?

I'll be up there.  It's one of the better shows around. Not as big as Somerset, but bigger than the other shows around.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lefty's Tiefest? Looking for info on it.

Ah yes!  Lefty's casting demo.  Great for learning how to cast in the side-elbow style like Lefty -- and we all know Steve Rajeff, Joan Wulff, and Mel Krieger all suck.

"God will not let you cast until you get the end of the fly line moving" -- God let's me do it all the time when I roll cast, but I promised him I'd stop stealing sweet-n-low packets from Corner Bakery in exchange for certain, deity-like casting abilities.  You other people have to read and cast just like Lefty.

"The end of the fly line goes in the direction that the rod speeds up and stops" -- I made a deal with Satan to let me snap cast to break this awesome "rule".  I play both sides of the board.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Lefty's Tiefest? Looking for info on it.

Can anyone tell me about Tiefest? I can't get a clear answer about how this event goes.  Including what to expect, what is the cost?… etc…  I tried looking on line and tried the Facebook page but that was no help.

Anyone else going?

This is the first video I've ever put together (for anything, ever), so I'd be interested to know if it works in terms of clarity and pacing. The video quality is Youtube's doing, so I'll try to fix that next time.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tuscon or Phoenix Area Fly Fishing

Ha! That's pretty funny!

I think I'm going to end up hitting the Phoenix area. It looks like the Lake Pleasant fishing is supposed to be pretty spectacular between constant topwater striper action and massive largemouths and smallmouths, so I'll probably end up doing a guided trip for that. I also discovered there's a large population of carp in the urban canals around Phoenix, so that's right in my wheelhouse. Great time killer for the few hours of light I'll have when I get in town.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: FLETCHER'S UPDATE - and THANK YOU to the NPS!!!

Most agencies can be made to work effectively when there's an immense amount of political pressure from people who wear suits into DC on weekdays.

I suspect in this case several Congressmen have buddies who griped about the potential loss of access and a lot of things were moved along as a result.

Whatever works -- I admit that I did not read the actual reports about how the fix was achieved.  Did they simply build a better dock on top of the mud pile, or did they get people to come and and remove some of the mud and take it a couple of hundred feet and dump it in a pile somewhere nearby (a la Anacostia River >> Kingman Island project)?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tuscon or Phoenix Area Fly Fishing

I live in Tucson and grew up here. Leave your flyrods at home. Seriously.

You've got great saltwater fishing 4-6 hours south and into Mexico from here. Or you've got decent trout fishing 3-4 hours north and/or east of here. There are a string of warmwater lakes east of Phoenix, but those are at least 2-3 hours away from Tucson and you definitely need a boat. There are 3 urban ponds in Tucson that offer stocker trout in the winter and stocker bass and catfish year round. Some of these are reclaimed water and have a funny color. There are three warmwater ponds south of Tucson, all about an hours drive. You could fish these from shore. Arivaca Lake, Pena Blanca Lake and Patagonia Lake. Don't eat the fish as we have really high levels of naturally occurring heavy metals. The drive from Tucson to Patagonia via highway 83 is spectacular. Truly the best face of the Sonoran desert. And oddly really good wine country.

For trout, Oak Creek is probably the closest at about 3 hours north of Tucson. There is some other water in that vicinity that gets little to no pressure. I won't be putting that info on the list.

For a mixed bag that could include smallmouth, largemouth, carp, trout, and panfish of all varieties in moving water, the stretch of the Salt River east of Phoenix and upstream of the tubing place to the Lake Pleasant damn I hear is good with little flyfishing pressure and great wading access. It is about 2.5 hours north of Tucson.

There is a lake on the top of Mt. Lemmon, about 45 minutes straight up out of Tucson that is stocked with trout. But I wouldn't fish it without powerbait.

That said, hiking here is unparalleled. Tons of great trails right around town. There are endless miles of scenic drives. There are two cavern systems if you are into caves Colossal Cave and Kartchner Caverns. We have two National Monuments dedicated to the saguaro cactus. There is stellar birding here.

If you want more local intel, hit me up via email. I can fill you in on local bars and food. If I'm around, we should grab a drink.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} FLETCHER'S UPDATE - and THANK YOU to the NPS!!!

To All TPFRers

As you all know, in response to the closing of Fletcher's Cove late last fall, an enormous effort was launched to help restore the Cove to safe use, and protect all of or access to this phenomenal resource.  If you are new to the group, check out this link for more context and back story:  https://groups.google.com/d/msg/tidal-potomac-fly-rodders/suJLselliDk/TTpicQeGcEkJ

Out of this effort, a coalition was formed which is now formally known as "Friends of Fletcher's Cove".   FFC has worked hard for and received tremendous support and cooperation from the National Park Service and would like to thank them for their commitment to this cause and their prompt action.  Attached is a letter to NPS Superintendent Kevin Brandt that was just sent out doing just that.

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported FFC from the onset, and everyone here at TPFR who signed the petition back in December to help add fuel to the effort.  You can count on TPFR being a partner of FFC for a long time and we will certainly answer the call to help however and whenever needed.

Thanks again for all of your continued interest, support, and action.

Dan Davala

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tuscon or Phoenix Area Fly Fishing

Hi all - I'll be doing a work trip out to Tucson at the beginning of May and figured I'd stay out there for an extra day to do some fishing if anything is worth it. I've been rather limited in the fishing opportunities I've found in/near Tucson - at least from a guided trip perspective. I found Hook Up Outfitters out of Phoenix that offers stripers/largemouth trips on Lake Pleasant or Trout trips in Oak Creek Canyon. Is anyone aware of anything else that they'd consider "must do" in the general area? Lee's Ferry is a bit too long of a trip from Tucson for one day of fishing.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Horsepower at Fletchers

A 4.5 to 5 will provide more than sufficient thrust. I have even seen people with 2.5s there but you will want the extra thrust when the water starts flowing

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Horsepower at Fletchers

I have a five horse power 4 stroke Honda (weighs about 60 lbs) and it is fine even going "uphill" against Spring currents. A 3.5 HP would probably work OK, but be slow upstream in  the Spring.  A 6 HP  (e.g., Tohatsu, Nissan or Mercury) would probably  work well too.

If II am not mistaken, the maximum limit is about 8 HP or ~
80 Lbs which would is a little heavy to easily haul to the boats from the parking area just up from the dock.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Horsepower at Fletchers

Hey there TPFR - long-time lurker, but I thought I'd chime in since I can offer some actual knowledge here.  We have a 42 lb. thrust electric motor that is a bit underpowered.  It's fine for tooling around the cove, but it is slow to get upstream towards Chain Bridge.  If I was buying an electric motor, I would not buy less than 50 lb. thrust.   Per previous poster, any gas engine would probably be fine.
