Hi Andrew. I'll take it if you still got it. I've been looking for a vise. I'll trade you for some coffee beans if you like.

Free clamp-on style fly tying vise, perfect for beer ties. Decent quality with knurled brass knobs. Recently moved and rediscovered it in a drawer.I thought there has to be a forum member that can put it to good use. Located near Dupont Circle.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 1st time in the Tidal Basin

Don't feel bad.  I went out last evening...under the small bridge that leads to the Pentagon harbor from about 1800-1930.  Tried surface bugs and some streamer work and not even a bite.  Did see plenty of fish chasing and eating things (either on the surface or chased there)....but nothing bit at any of my presentations.

I then rode my bike over to FDR and fished that area (about 1945 until 2100).  Very little to no surface action. Again tried surface bugs and a few streamers.  Not a thing.

It was pretty windy with that strong push from the South, that made casting fun at times.

It was a beautiful bike ride back to the hill though, and nothing beats just getting out and fishing (even without the fish part).

From the old hands out here....is this normal?

Cheers

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Schoolie stripers?

Or....you could drop a canoe into the SF shenandoah and catch the 70+ smallmouth bass we just caught with the Missouri family in town ;).  It's ever-so-slightly-murky, but fishing great.

The real secret about the gunpowder is that there are "500 fish per square foot" or whatever, meaning your life is pointless and you should probably do something else if you cannot catch at least 40 trout every trip out there.  They are everywhere in there!  If you slip and fall wading there and don't have a belt on, you'll literally have 6-7 trout down your pants when you stand up...and also some did-e-moe and probably at least one other angler to dig out.

Sorry - I don't know anything about striped bass.

The reward was simply getting a tight line after successful presentations (mandatory reach casts and downstream presented sulphurs in sizes 16-18). The hatch peaked from about 2:30 to 5:30 but wasn't incredibly thick. Trout were keying on sulphurs and egg laying caddis skittering across the top to their doom in the flat water immediately following decent riffle water (made more stretch and York road access). One the hatch died down, swinging partridge and orange and sulphur soft hackles worked as well with one tiny shot 18" above the first fly. Tight lines everyone!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Schoolie stripers?

Just wondering if schoolie stripers are still an option for fishing within the city area these days, has anybody gone recently? Also, aside from gravelly, where do people go to target these critters?

I have a friend coming into town who is hoping to do some fly fishing or light spin fishing and he sure does love bass. Any striper or consistent largemouth/smallmouth recommendations would be awesome!:) thanks again guys and hope the early summer is treating everyone well!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin

I went down last night and fished for an hour after work (6:30-7:30). Used my 5wt orvis clearwater, with sinking leader and a white clouser with green flashdo(I think I described that right). Started at the first steps down to the water from the FDR memorial, casted and walked another 2 or 3 feet, casted again.  Finished about a quarter mile closer to the intake at the second set of stairs down to the water from the FDR.  Had a bunch of nibbles, inlcuding a 5 inch small mouth that tried to grab the fly as I was pulling it out to cast agin. Caught 3 fish: 1) a 6 inch perch that fell off as I was pulling it out of the water (so no pictures); 2) the 4 inch fish in the first picture (a perch? I have no idea as it looks too yellow to me),; 3) and then a 12-14 inch catfish (2nd and 3rd pic).  The cat took a good 5 minutes or so of fighting to bring in and bent my 5wt straight down (thought it was going to break).

Caught the small fish (first picture) fishing right a long the wall (side cast 10-15 feet, let sink 5 seconds and strip in). Caught the other throwing 10-15 feet into the basin and both took the fly about 5-6 feet from the wall.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Potomac River Snakehead Tournament team

Love to join you, Rich, but I'm dog sitting this week. I will be coming down to Smallwood for the weigh in (with the dogs) and the tastings on Sunday.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lightning struck twice

Nice fish, Jeff. At first I thought the file name for the pic was your name. ;-) I was out walking my daughter's dogs on the towpath on Sunday and just upstream of Sycamore Island Club there must have been 8, 10, 12 good sized carp on other side from the towpath hovering in the water column. Sort of looked like they were waiting for mulberries to drop, though couldn't make any out.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smell that musk

Great fish,  That's a story for a lifetime.

NICK, amazing fish!  Congrats!   It took a smallmouth fly?  Or maybe you caught a bass and didn't realize it and then caught a musky immediately afterward ;)

I have had something like this happen while crappie fishing.  I was feeling the little peck peck peck on my line when all of a sudden the rod was almost jerked out of my hand and I ended up catching a 5 pound catfish.  However a size 2 Clouser is probably big enough to irritate a Musky :-)

All those pike seem to come in close and then start to put up a fight.  Landing it on 0x tippet with out any wire or shock leader is pretty impressive.  I bet he towed you around a bit.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac River Snakehead Tournament team

Hey guys,

I know most of you are already aware of the Potomac Snakehead Tournament that’s been talked about here.  Both TPFR and Urban Angler are sponsors of the event.  We posted about this last year and put together a team of 6 non-motorized anglers.  This includes kayak, canoe, SUP, and wading anglers.

Every year, we wind up having a good time spooking snakehead and catching bass all day on topwater.  In the past there were some pretty hefty largemouth caught, but the snakehead remains to be an elusive fly rod target.

Team Urban Angler perks:
  • All anglers on our team are not subject to the entry fee for the tournament, as we’re sponsors.
  • All anglers receive 16lb. leader, and a selection of 7 flies that have worked for snakehead
  • Free beer and snakehead at the event
First 6 folks who commit are in.  Joel, Hendrick, Charlie, Davis, and Remick – I told you guys last year if you wanted to fish again, you’re grandfathered in.

We will have a pre-tournament meeting sometime this week after work to talk about fishing spots.

Please e-mail me direct if you’re interested to richard@urbanangler.com.

Regards,

R
