{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: What's up with Four Mile Run?

If there's a strong NW wind, it commonly empties at low tide.  At the outfall there is nearly always *some water with a few fish, even with the entire thing empty.  One day it was quite murky, but still productive as tide dropped.

I've probably fished it 9-10 times in the last several weeks and have found the usual gang of 100 small bass (LMB and SMB) and sunfish and have had several "stand there and pull out as many as you want" days (ask Carl), and a couple of slower days -- I haven't seen the variety of species that are usually there though.  A couple of times the bass where chasing minnows up to the surface and "popping" which was sort of entertaining.

Your mileage may vary -- I think Todd got into some carp and/or goldfish not too long ago.

Overall, the winter is killing me.  My soul is buried under the foundation of the Hoover camp until March.....maybe late Feb.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fletcher’s Cove Access Update:

 • Work Begins on Dock

• Enhanced Web Presence

• Last Chance to Help Name the Coalition

Maintenance personnel from the National Park Service arrived at Fletcher's Cove on Wednesday, January 27 to begin the much anticipated dock repairs. Heavy equipment was used to remove the condemned section and prepare the site.  While we are currently unaware of details for the dock maintenance project, C&O Canal NHP Superintendent Kevin Brandt has reaffirmed his commitment to a March 1st completion.

Access to the dock at Fletcher's Cove was closed last October due to safety concerns. A coalition of Potomac River enthusiasts organized in December to raise awareness about the siltation problems at Fletcher's and petition the Park Service to keep the public river access open.  The original Awareness Statement along with a list of supporters remains active.  Participation in the petition to help build support for a long-term solution is still encouraged.

A dedicated website for the coalition effort is being considered.  For now, we urge supporters to check out the recent enhancements to our web presence.  A home page has been set up to chronicle activity to date and direct visitors to news articles as well as a fascinating Fletcher's Cove photo album site.  Photographs of this week's construction activity appear in the album "2015 Dock Repairs," and there will be frequent updates as the work continues.

To prepare for the challenges ahead and explore possible fund raising strategies, our coalition needs a name!  The names associated with our email address and web pages have been used on a trial basis and are among the choices offered on the Vote for a Name page.  Additional suggestions are welcome.  The deadline for submission has been extended to February 7th.

If you have any suggestions, comments, old photographs or want to help out, please feel free to contact us at Potomacaccess@gmail.com.

So check out those rubber band nymphs. The size 16 darker brown one caught a few of those rainbows. Rubber band nymphs, they work!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Veterans Fishingcommunity.org -

Greetings:

www.fishingcommunity.org is a local nonprofit that has used 100% of revenues for programs, and includes fly fishing, spin fishing and bait fishing.  We also include veterans of all types and their families because we believe all who have served should fish (as should the rest of the world, but you can only do so much!).  Several of you helped us last year with our wounded heroes Shad Event, which worked out really well, pictures on our web site.  We help out with the Cub Scouts and other groups when possible.

We're looking for help on a number of fronts;

Volunteers:  We have 10-15 events this year, mostly Saturday Family Fishing days.  We can use help in both fishing and non-fishing areas.

Old gear:  We both use and sell any excess to help fund our efforts.

Instructors:  We have multiple classes throughout the year at the USO at Fort Belvoir.  Fly tying is one we'd like to offer, and there is room for a couple more fly casting instructors.

     Donations:  Always welcome.  www.fishingcommunity.org

Give me a call at 202 460 92907 or email me at peterlodell at gmail dot com.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fwd: PUBLIC MEETING February 4, 2015 - Georgetown Nonmotorized Boathouse Zone Development Plan

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Sebastian, Jim (DDOT)" <jim.sebastian@dc.gov>
Date: January 25, 2015 at 3:45:52 PM EST
To: "DC Bicyclists and Pedestrians" <dc_bicyclists@lyris.dc.gov>
Subject: FW: PUBLIC MEETING February 4, 2015 - Georgetown Nonmotorized Boathouse Zone Development Plan
Reply-To: jim.sebastian@dc.gov

DC Bicyclists and Pedestrians List. To be removed from this list, see instructions below.

Dear Sir or Madam,

The National Park Service (NPS) is developing an implementation plan for nonmotorized boating facilities and related park improvements in the western section of Georgetown Waterfront Park in Washington, D.C.  The 1987 Georgetown Waterfront Park Master Plan established a zone for boathouse facilities that has not yet been implemented. The need for such facilities was confirmed in the 2013 Feasibility Study for a Nonmotorized Boathouse Zone.

The proposed project area extends from 34th Street, NW within Georgetown Waterfront Park to approximately a quarter-mile upriver from Key Bridge. The project area encompasses both public and private land including portions of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Rock Creek Park, and several privately-owned parcels (the Potomac Boat Club, several private residences, and a small parcel accessible from the shoreline only).

The purpose of this project is establish a Potomac River recreation zone that more fully supports non-motorized recreation, increases the public's access to the river, improves functionality of the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) as it connects to the Georgetown Waterfront Park, and respects the historic character, natural resources, and existing recreational use of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Rock Creek Park.  Nonmotorized boating facilities are needed in Georgetown due to limited public access points for nonmotorized boating and paddle sports along the Georgetown waterfront.  Increased popularity for nonmotorized water sports (canoeing, kayaking, rowing, paddle boarding, etc.), and insufficient capacity at current boathouse facilities that provide access to the river and related amenities (boat storage, concessions, access facilities, boat rentals, beach, and docks.  The current configuration of the CCT and its connection to Georgetown does not provide safe and compatible access for pedestrians and bicyclists with motorized vehicles to and through the "zone."

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the NPS will be preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate these proposed actions. The EA will address the project background, the purpose and need for the proposed actions, a determination of environmental issues and potential impacts resulting from the alternatives considered (including the no action alternative), and public involvement and agency coordination. Concurrent to the NEPA process, the NPS will conduct consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA).

At this time, the NPS is announcing a public scoping meeting and a 30-day public scoping period to solicit public comments on preliminary alternatives for this proposal (see attached newsletter). The meeting will consist of an open house with a short presentation. NPS staff will be on hand to visit with you and answer questions.

The public scoping meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at the Palisades Public Library at 4901 V Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20007.

For further information or if you have special needs to be accommodated during this public open house please contact: Tammy Stidham, National Capital Region, at (202) 619-7474.

The public is invited to identify any issues or concerns they might have with the proposed project so that the NPS can appropriately consider them in the preparation of the Environmental Assessment.  Comments may be provided either in person at the meeting or electronically at the National Park Service's Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website (http://parkplanning.nps.gov/nmbzea) or submit written comments to:

Tammy Stidham
Chief, Planning, Compliance & GIS
National Capital Region
National Park Service
ATTN: Georgetown Nonmotorized Boathouse Zone Development Plan
1100 Ohio Drive SW
Washington, DC 20242

Please submit your scoping comments by February 19, 2015. Once the EA is developed, it will be made available for public review for a 30-day period. If you wish to be added to the park's mailing list for this or other announcements, please be sure to indicate that in your response.

Bryan-

Hit me via private message.  I have fished Cocoa Beach for 5 straight years.  I will pass along my learning curve.  Too much to write up here.

Needless to say it took me that long to hit a monster red on a popper this past fall.

I also hit jacks and blues from the surf.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Camping and Fly Fishing around the Space Coast/Orlando Area

Run, do not walk, to your local fly shop for the most recent Eastern Fly Fishing, which has an informative article on DIY fishing this area by yours truly. Do not buy the magazine, because if I told you to buy it this would be a commercial post. But definitely read it. There was also a good article about the area in the next-most-recent issue, so read both if you can.

As for camping, if you are retired military you might be able to camp at KARS Park 1, right on the Banana River. The only public camping out there is at Jetty Park, right on the beach at Port Canaveral - but it does not have access to the river side. Sebastian Inlet State Park is an hour or so south of Cape Canaveral, but has great fishing on both the ocean and river sides. There are also some private RV campgrounds near Oak Hill, on the Mosquito Lagoon (e.g. Oak Hill Fish Camp). Google Maps can point you to a bunch of others, but the advantage of the Oak Hill area is that it is not as built-up as farther south. That said, you will want the canoe or some other boat up there - the wading is less accessible.

I have spent some time fishing mosquito lagoon which is close to the indian river lagoon.  Caught some specks and ladyfish wade fishing, but in general, it is not an easy place to do DIY, at least without a boat.  Google around and you should be able to find some maps with access/parks.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re:

I've fished the NBPR on a number of occasions over the last few years.  I've found that Barnum, WV is a nice place to go.  Like Terry, I've had really good days and bad days.  The dry fly fishing is usually hit or miss.  You pretty much have to be there during hatch to find fish on dries.  Nymphing however can work year round.  Prince nymphs, zebra midges, and tan scuds are my go to there as well as on the Savage.  I live in DC and usually make it an overnight trip and either camp up near the Savage or at Barnum.  From Barnum you can hike up river to the dam and fish the two miles of catch and release water (really scenic) or hike down river.  There is a road that parallels the river for miles down from Barnum so its fairly easy access.

With that being said, there are really nice trout all the way down to the paper plant at Bloomington, MD.  If you can take the smell, you can fish there or even farther down river.  There are nice trout and smallmouth below the paper mill.

Danny,

I highly recommend you chat with or better yet spend a day with guide PJ Daley, owner of Savage River Angler (not to be confused with "Savage River Outfitters", the shop).  He spends 100s of days a year on the Savage and N. Branch, so you'd learn a ton.  PJ is who I call when I need up to the moment info about either fishery.  Outstanding guide and all around good guy.

A few years ago I had my dog swimming free in a wonderful stream pool off the Columbia Pike access point. Two bicycle police rode by, then stopped to convince me that 4MR is badly polluted and I really didn't want my dog in there. The thing is industrial drainage, got it.

Presenting your fly by "Water Hauling" might not apply to dapping deep crappie holes,
but if you are not already familiar, this is a valuable approach if you add jigs to your arsenal.
The link below will give you an introduction:
