{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sunfish, scaled and breaded

Glad to inspire someone to enjoy an awesome resource with their family! All it takes is that first step folks. "I am going to both fly fish AND keep a few fish today. This doesnt make me a bad person." For the lifelong brainwashed, you'll only hate yourself for an hour or so. Less if you have beer.

And yes, I'd wear that shirt to any stream or fly fishing event!

Awesome!  Beautiful country indeed.  I'll be interested to hear about the sharpies.  Good to know about the Wapsi.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Nail Polish as Paint

It will work, but acrylic paint and a coat of 30 minute epoxy doesn't take too long if you are set up to do the drying.
Warning, Wapsi bodies don't take sharpie's well and both nail polish and epoxy make them run.

Andrew:

Think of dressing out those fish as an anatomy lesson for your kids. Boys seem to dig it most and for a longer period of time, though our youngest, she's now 26, still likes to watch me clean my catch for the frying pan. She's also the only one my my womenfolk who will eat fresh fish too. But then again she has a sort  of professional interest: she's a RN.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Nail Polish as Paint

Finger Lakes - one of my favorite parts of the world - You could certainly use nail polish, they might chip from wear and tear but I doubt the fish notice - also you could use permanent markers which can fade from sunlight and constant immersion in water. I haven't used them yet, but on Sunday I purchased Sharpies that are oil based paint markers - package says you can use on leather, wood, etc. Assuming your poppers are the hard foam types I think these paint markers would work. If I remember I'll paint a hard foam popper with one tonight.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Nail Polish as Paint

Walt Cary (Walt's Poppers) advises in his "one time only" presentations that he seems to give at every festival he attends that nail polish is a fine option. He also scares you to death about ever attempting to imitate his popper process (fumes have killed like 3 of his friends)-so I've never done it, but it makes a lot of sense.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sunfish, scaled and breaded

Mark,

I fished near Greyling last year, but just two evenings and the hex hatch was down.  Supposedly it was OK before I got there and really even better after I left.  I hooked up with quite a few brookies, but I think I only heard one "gulp" in the evening.  There was some Led Zeplin coming from one of the cabins that made it a rather surreal experience at dusk.

I plan on going back some time.

Anyway, Mike Steiner (Orvis up at Nemacolin) did say we'd be there in time for the cicada hatch.

Nothing like watching big, lazy trout key in on big bugs. Though there was no significant hatch on this highly manufactured piece of water, the trout rose readily to a splashy cicada pattern and chase a dark streamer. Given this is supposed to be a big brood year I highly recommend you put these in your box and keep an eye out on your next trip. Pop did quite well, but we've got to work on his trout set. For a guy used to fishing bass all his life he sure forgot how to set a hook! I also gave my own new 7' 3wt butterstick a shakedown - it can take big fish!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Hot Springs, AR

Gene,

Two caveats: I've mostly been there in the winter months, and typically have not had boat access. There's some striper action below Blakely Dam (Hamilton Lake), typically in the PM when they are generating. If you have time for a drive, the Little Red is a fantastic trout fishery. You can DIY at the Little Red, or I'd recommend Rouse for guides.

You were able to fish the Hex hatch and not get baptized?  I must walk around too much when fishing the hex hatch.  Wading in chest deep water in the dark seems to lead to getting wet.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Sunfish, scaled and breaded

I wish I could say that fishing for and eating sunfish reminds me of being a kid, but I didn't start fishing until I was in college.  However, much like trains, fishing for sunfish is fun for ages 3 to 100.  If I had to choose just one fish to catch the rest of my life, it would be bream!

That's great news. And this from the latest Friends of Fletcher's Cove update from Mile Bailey (who has done a tremendous amount of work to bring various entities together) is very encouraging.

"We are also pleased to report that the Fletchers Cove remediation project may qualify for a significant federal matching grant. In response to the work of FFC, key private and government stakeholders have begun a dialogue, with a focus on how to fund maintenance dredging for continued boat access to the river. Updates to follow as progress warrants. Please feel free to contact us."

So any donation will bring even more in to the pot.

I can clean it up, re bag it etc. and put it to great use.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Closest flounder fishing to DC?

Went to point lookout and Smith Creek today. Didn't do any kayak rentals as a lot of both can be reached on foot. In hindsight, it probably would have helped, as I caught nothing but a foul hooked crab. At one point I saw wave after wave of glass minnows go swimming up a channel and nothing touched them. Kinda took the hint then that it wasn't gonna pan out. Didn't see a fish over 6" all day.

I definitely see the potential of that place though. Point Lookout especially has a wide variety of water that you can reach without a boat. Today the Patuxent side was getting whipped by the wind and was churned up with no visibility. Potomac side was better. Smith Creek was somewhere in between. I caught Smith Creek at low tide which didn't help anything.

Not really day a trip but Lynnhaven and Rudee Inlets in Virginia Beach have some great mixed bag fishing for flounder, puppy drum, blues, speckled trout, "grey trout", and stripers. Throw in a few croakers for frying too. Fortunately the best fishing comes after the tourist hatch has died off In September - October. I also liked working the jetties around Ocean View.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Closest flounder fishing to DC?

I am extremely familiar with that area.

You can use the boat ramp and the area near that would be great fishing.

If the weather is settled and you find access you could fish point lookout.  There is a bit of current there.  Point lookout extends way out and it has current from two different places and sand.  It would be a great place to fish.

The reason I am familiar with this area as I have sailed through it hundreds of times.  I have anchored overnight at Point Lookout State Park and seen, first hand, the area.  I am thinking that it would be a great place to fly fish.  I have seen dolphins in Smith Creek and the scenery is beautiful.

If you have a boat and you want some really interesting and remote fishing you should try to get over to Smith Island.  I have flyfished there and it is incredible.  Plenty of current and good areas to fish.  Plenty of flats as well are in that area.  I keep meaning to sail back over there and spend some time fishing it.  I caught a lot of stripers there and I am sure that there are flounder, puppy drum, trout, etc.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Closest flounder fishing to DC?

The Point Lookout area and Smith Creek (Kitts Point) are good choices for flounder when they are in. I would wait a bit until late August or September. Smith Creek has a boat ramp and is great for small boats. Point Lookout near the causeway facing the bay side is good for flounder and other species. Here is a picture of a flounder caught not too far from the causeway last September on a chartreuse and white half and half. Oh, dont overlook specks in both of these spots later in the year. Right now, mostly white perch in the creeks and schoolie rockfish around. I also have heard that there are a few 10-12 inch reds around this year which hopefully will translate to a good fishery in 2018 if the hard winters stay away.

This year has not been a great year for pups.

In years past, I have heard them going all the way up to Maryland. If I were you, I'd also look at the Maryland side of the bay on the eastern shore.

I have never fished over there but I have heard good things about the Tangier island area.

Another thing I'm interested in targeting is puppy (aka red) drum. They are great fighters even as "small" 20-24" fish. A real handful even on an 8 wt. Sounds like they come up to about the same areas as flounder

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Closest flounder fishing to DC?

St. George's Point is at the mouth of the St. Mary's river.  In that area there is a lot of shallow water.  Most of that shallow water is occupied by crab pots.

Another place that isn't too far from there is Smith Creek.  There are a few launch points there and you could fish the channel edge coming into Smith Creek.

Another possibility is to go to Point Lookout State park.  They have a launch ramp there.  You could fish the channel coming in there.  There is structure, rocks, and there is current.  You could easily fish it from a kayak.  That would be a great location to try for flounder (sandy bottom, channel, and current) and I bet it holds Stripers.  It is close to the Bay so it would hold bluefish and other species as well.

Yeah I've caught 2 before. I am just wanting to get after something different than usual. I did some google searching and found out they are common around st. georges island on the Potomac. I'm gonna look for some flats near dropoffs and just toss clousers around. Figure I'll probably run into small stripers and white perch occasionally, if no flounder.

Have you caught flounder on the fly before? I find them to be by far the most boring saltwater fish to catch.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Closest flounder fishing to DC?

Looking for somewhere that I could possibly do a day trip for flatfish on the fly. Anywhere with a boat rental is a huge plus, if wading is not possible. I guess at some point downriver you can find them in the tidal Potomac - anyone have any idea how far I'd have to go?

Appreciate any feedback!! Thanks.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tributaries to fish near Craig, MT

Little Prickly Pear Creek has some fish in it, but also lots of rattlesnakes. If you're willing to do a little drive, you could bug out over the divide to fish the Blackfoot, North Fork of the Blackfoot, or Little Blackfoot easily. Craig to Avon (on the little blackfoot) is 1 hour 15 mins; craig to Ovando on the blackfoot/north is

Little Blackfoot was my default Non-Missouri, close-to-home option when I lived in Helena about 10 years back. Easy wading, small river, but had some decent browns in it. Westslope Cutthroats in there as well, and some solid dry-fly options, especially on caddis & terrestrials.

I should clarify- I'm on the 'Mo for 7 days straight through 4th of July. At least three of those days will be in drift boats. Looking for change of scenery as much as anything.

Dan nailed it.  Float the Mo. If you have the chance to do 2 or 3 days on the Mo, do it.  One day isn't enough in my opinion.

I've never fished up the Dearborn but have heard very good things.  The mouth of it is a good spot to anchor up.  So are the upriver and downriver points on all the islands.  It gives you a chance to get out and wade.

I rented boats through Headhunters last fall and it was a blast.  $150 for the day.  You show up at the ramp and the boat is there.  They shuttle your car to the take out.  When you're done, you just get in your car and drive away, they pick the boat up later that night.  So simple it's scary.  Plus you can camp at most of if not all of the boat ramps along the Mo.

The second day we floated it, I saw a pod of 500+ fish rising during a BWO hatch in a quarter mile long eddy in the canyon section.  It wasn't too far below the Dearborn and was truly surreal.

Your best bet is to contact either Headhunters or Wolf Creek Anglers. Both are great shops and will be more than willing to send you in the right direction. I never fished tribs around Craig. I would recommend fishing the Mo', The fish are plentiful and are powerful swimmers that will likely take some backing off your reel every now and again. If there's more than one in your party you ought to rent a drift boat for the day from Headhunters, They'll launch you, shuttle you, etc. Even if you have zero rowing experience the Mo is like a fast moving lake.

Dee to fish the Missouri and GlacierNP for 9 days starting Saturday. I know the 'Mo gets super crowded so I'm curious if there are any worthwhile tribs to wade up and fish. The Deerborn looks promising. Montana has some of the best wading access laws in the country so private access shouldn't be an issue. Thanks again- y'all always set me straight. -Alex
