{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Wenatchee, Washington

I worked at a fly shop in Seattle when I was growing up and did a ton of fishing all over Washington. The East Cascades should be fine, but depending when you go in the Spring, snow melt can be an issue. The rivers can get more cloudy as the day progresses. The nice thing about those rivers East of the Cascades is that they don't have lots of trees on the banks like back here and on the West side of the Cascades so you can get nice long casts without worry.

Have fun.

Guy and I had a great day on the Chesapeake today with Capt Tom Hughes. We left out of Sandy Point at dawn. The weather was nice and we caught dozens of small stripers. We fished sinking lines and small Clousers.

Larry lives April-November near the Salmon River in New York off a dirt road in a cabin he built.

It looks over salmon and steelhead spawning gravel !

He'll be back in town once the snow starts up there and his road isn't drive able. Not much of a bass pro employee anymore

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Maryland Trout

Personally, I enjoy the Gunpowder river.  The browns there are on the smaller scale and are not easily convinced, which can provide for a very challenging yet rewarding experience since the fish are wild.

There's alot of water to fish and ground to cover so if on a particular day you feel the water is too "pressured" you can always find a spot away from other anglers if you're up for it.  Most times I've fished there I've hardly seen anyone else on the water.

The worst are the kayakers and people who play fetch with their dogs.  The dogs swimming in and spooking fish while you're fishing a hole or a run.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} GP Fishing Report 10_29_2013

Nice!  I caught my first fly rod fish at GP as well with Rob....just over a year ago now I believe.  I've only gone back once, and just got a needlefish and something else....don't remember.

So GP is always a neat spot to me, if for no other reason.

Most of the success I've had since then I can attribute to a really great deal I made with Satan several months ago.  Well, he said he was Satan anyway.

Brenden, how does the area look now around Wenatchee due to the forest fires you mentioned.  Is there a lot of noticeable  burned trees?

Also, if you take Rt. 2 up through leavenworth into the cascades the wenatchee river and the tributaries up there all have some pretty nice cutthroats and some salmon runs. yakima is always good but lots of very detailed regs that shift monthly on where/how you can fish.

I was out there last fall when they had some massive fires going, and apparently there have been lots of land/mud slides since so might be worth double checking access if you do head up into the hills.

Another option that i highly recommend is doing the 'cascade loop' which you can easily find a ton of info on online. tons of great fishing and beautiful scenery throughout. great option for a 3-5 day fishing vacation.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} GP Fishing Report 10_29_2013

Success!

I fished from about 7:45-8:45am this morning.  I started with a white and olive clouser with no effect.  After a while I switched to an all white version.  Not long after that Aden arrived several yards down from me, giving me some reassurance that I was finally in the right place at the right time.

About 8:30 I pulled in my first fish from GP, my first striper on a fly, and my first fish on a clouser minnow all with the same catch.  That was my only catch of the morning, but it was extremely satisfying.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Maryland Trout

I second Jeff's comment.

If you won't mind to drive extra hour and extra stays, Savage river is in western MD and several good rivers near by it. I have a book "Guide to Maryland Trout Fishing" by Charlie Gelso & Larry Coburn (8 or 9 dollars for used book I got). It has rich information, map with park lots, trails, etc. It is BIG plus and I read/use it all time. You can order it on Amazon. Sometime Orvis stores sells it.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Maryland Trout

I won't fish the Gunpowder on a weekend. I don't have the patience for city morons stomping through your holes.

But to be fair, I don't fish anywhere on the East Coast on a weekend if I can avoid it.

This makes 7 or 8 trips there for me without so much as a nibble.  I'd love to tag along with someone to learn how to approach that spot if anyone wouldn't mind some company.

I've talked a lot of crap over the years about how underwhelming the Gunpowder is, but it is still the best water going in urban Maryland. I've had decent days and I have had a lot of SLOW days. Yesterday Micah Danmeyer convinced me to drop work and head out with him.

We decided to fish the stocked section first and maybe only because we didn't have a lot of time and didn't get down there until about 11am. Started throwing heavily weighted Patuxent Specials at the bank. Immediately started catching chubs. On my 4th or 5th cast I broke something off on the hook set using 5x. I immediately switched to 4x and tied on the same fly. 3-4 casts later I hooked this lady. She was all of 20" and probably weighed close to 4 pounds.

The rest of the day was great. No more big fish but plenty of the Gunpowder average brown. And tons of chubs. I have never minded catching chubs, particularly when they are going to aggressively take streamers and weigh a pound or more. One of these days I'm going to keep a bucket full of them and see what they taste like smoked.

I popped in and picked off about a half dozen schoolies in the 12"-16" class  over the next hour. The Bigger fish were in the heaviest water and deep. I used a 250gr sinking line with 4ft of 0x, and some size 2 clousers I tied with Steve Farrars flash blend material. Pretty slow morning as far as GP goes, but not a bad stop before opening up the shop. If you get up early to fish it, you may want a backup plan as it tends to get crowded at Gravelly Point this time of year. Maybe look to the Pentagon Marina outflow, or Rock Creek where it hits the Potomac. I haven't hit either as of late but they have produced for me in the past during this time of year. Maybe try the Duck Pond as well, I pulled about 15 LM bass out last Monday morning…mostly small ones but a few pushing 14''-15"…get out and get your fishing in while we have the nice weather!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Wenatchee, Washington

One of my favorite rivers in the country is just a little ways up the road... Methow River is beautiful and has some massive golden cutthroats along with a steelhead run.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Missouri/Bitterroot Rivers Report/Pics

WD-40 is a penetrant and lubricant that displaces water - WD stands for Water Displacement. Ingredients are a trade secret but in my experience it contains no solvents that might affect the PVC coating of a fly line. Definitely keep acetone (nail polish remover) away from fly lines unless you are fabricating your own integral loops on lines.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} GP Fishing Report 10_29_2013

I was there from about 5-6:30 yesterday to try and hit the outgoing tide in then evening. Turns out I was a little early, there was little to no water movement. I fished clousers across where the current would have been. When that didn't produce I tried hitting the shoreline with clousers, wooly buggers, and a variety of surface bugs.

This makes 7 or 8 trips there for me without so much as a nibble. I'd love to tag along with someone to learn how to approach that spot if anyone wouldn't mind some company.

Paul

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Personal Best Brown

Never took off the Patuxent Special. No more big fish but plenty of the Gunpowder average brown. And tons of chubs. I have never minded catching chubs, particularly when they are going to aggressively take streamers and weigh a pound or more. One of these days I'm going to keep a bucket full of them and see what they taste like smoked.

I started this topic because everybody should show the crazy fish that they pull out of 4mr. Onece I caught a small tigerfish on a large copper john that I was stripping for crappies. This could even become a new forum called 4MRFR Everybody knows what that stands for.
