I've talked a lot of crap over the years about how underwhelming the Gunpowder is, but it is still the best water going in urban Maryland. I've had decent days and I have had a lot of SLOW days. Yesterday Micah Danmeyer convinced me to drop work and head out with him.
We decided to fish the stocked section first and maybe only because we didn't have a lot of time and didn't get down there until about 11am. Started throwing heavily weighted Patuxent Specials at the bank. Immediately started catching chubs. On my 4th or 5th cast I broke something off on the hook set using 5x. I immediately switched to 4x and tied on the same fly. 3-4 casts later I hooked this lady. She was all of 20" and probably weighed close to 4 pounds.
The rest of the day was great. No more big fish but plenty of the Gunpowder average brown. And tons of chubs. I have never minded catching chubs, particularly when they are going to aggressively take streamers and weigh a pound or more. One of these days I'm going to keep a bucket full of them and see what they taste like smoked.
