John Bilotta and I are fortunate enough to be attending the Clearwater
Clave this year. Today started at 10 am with a THCI test prep class hosted
by Lee Davidson and Al Buhr along with three additional THCI instructors.
With only three candidates showing up, the math was greatly in our favor
and for the next 4 hours received personal instruction covering each cast
required on the THCI test. Having world class instructors to expose all
your casting flaws was an enormous learning experience. The Clave
officially starts tomorrow with an impressive lineup of presentations -

Oh and then we went fishing ! - The Clearwater is a big river suited for
traditional Spey long belly lines and is full of steelhead and salmon !

Yeah you are right - it is worth!!!...Just need to be patient in crowded
place. I also got better skill with casting because of that!
I did not have chance to measure & weight it - it might be around 25 to 30
lbs and 36" long. I was told that it is female with fat belly - eggs. I
guess that it is on the way to spawn place by now because the zone I caught
is the last place before the salmon ladder.

Backcountry - There are a couple of good sites at the bottom of Jeremy's
Run. Two good ones on the Rose River Loop trail where it connects to the
Dark Hallow Falls trail. Big Run is one of my favorite places to back
country camp and fish but like Matt said it is a haul to get down there and
the last 2 miles on the hike out cover about 1400 ft. of vertical. Big Run
also will dry up quickly if it hasn't rained and this time of year there
will be a ton of bears down there( just a heads up they won't bother you).
Rapidan- If you have a truck you can take the dirt road that runs beside
the Rapidan and camp right beside the stream at designated sites in the
Wildlife Management area.
The 4 campgrounds in the park are all close to some great fishing.
All that being said it's getting close to spawning time for the Brookies
and some people like to give them a break when they start. The guys at
Mossy usually mention it on their fishing report when it starts.
