{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Salmon Fishing the River Dee in Scotland

I had the chance to fish the River Dee near Banchory Scotland with Ghillie Karl Revel of tillquhillie fishing which owns the fishing rights for 1.5 miles across from Crathes Castle.

The location is beautiful with clear water desptie a heavy rain the day defore. Also, they have a nice fishing hut with a wood fire to allow warming up during lunch. However, the weather was good so we enjoyed lunch on the porch overlooking the river.

We fished Karl's gear. He advised against bringing my own gear, except a rain jacket, so that clearing customs both ways would be easy. Any one taking their own gear can pay the Orvis Banchory or Somer's Aberdenn to disinfect their equipment.

We fished spey rods and scandi rods.

The fishing was very slow. At the end of the day, I switched to a 14' 9" Otracle Scandi rod with a Rio AFS 10/11 and changes out the fly to a black Sunray Shadow (we had already tried local favorites (Flamethrower, Park Shrimp, and Posh Tosh).   That was the luck I needed. I managed to land a 8 pound salmon which we revived and released after the photo. I later found out that this was the second to last day of the season and that this area had produced only 60 salmon this season. I feel very lucky to have caught one.
