{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fly Fishing in Charleston, SC

Advice from a friend in a fly shop, as told to me.

When asking for advice in a local shop, ask about flies, ask about conditions, tippet, tides, but don't ask about specific locations.  When saltwater fly fishing you can ask about habitat, where would I expect to find a redfish?  Near mangroves, on changing tide near oyster bar?  etc.  You can get around the location question by asking for safe locations to wade/kayak/fish from?

His advice not mine.

There are two local fly shops in the area that I'm sure would be glad to give you some direction even if you can't afford a guide--Charleston Angler and Low Country Fly Shop.  Go buy a few flies and ask for advice.  Shops know that not everyone can afford a guided trip, especially college folks.

Hey everyone,

I just recently moved to Charleston for school and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good fly fishing spots anywhere in the area. As a college student, I cannot afford to get a guide to take me anywhere, so I'm relying on this forum to lead me to success. My main focus is reds, but I would be happy with anything I could hook. Let me know where you guys have had success if you've ever been down there.
