Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Sink tip, intermediate, or full sinking line

Any of the integrated shooting heads in the "fast sink" designation similar to the Orvis DC lines are really great for the shad run from a boat.  To me, they fish like a full sink line even though I guess they're techincally a 30' "sink tip" type of line.  Several companies make them and they're probably more or less the same thing -- I use a 250 gr line because my 8-weight is NOT fast, and the 300 gr overloads it too much for my preference.

I've heard the same stories as Rob about using them from shore (i.e. tangling and difficult to manage), and wouldn't try it.

With one of those and a floater, you could do what you stated in your post above.

I suggest a Sink Tip line - something like the 3D Depth Charge. I got a 300-grain for the Shad this year and it made a world of difference compared to the Full Sink line that I had been using.

I got an extra spool for my 8 wt and I'm trying to determine what line would be best to add on it.  It will likely be used most in the potomac for all species, maybe some salt, and maybe some lake fishing for small and largemouth.  At this time, I don't have a third spool so I'm trying to determine what would be the most useful out of the 3 listed.  Currently I just have a floating line.

Suggestions and explanation please.   Also, I have never fished the striper and shad runs in the spring here in DC, which I plan to do next year.

Thanks
