I don't know your son at all obviously, so I'm going to generalize on all 10 year old boys (apologies!) and say one factor to consider is the likelihood he sticks with it. Maybe he keeps it up and next year he gets another christmas present of an upgrade. Or maybe it doesn't take and you've saved yourself from buying an expensive vice... unless of course this means you get an upgrade :) . Point being, start him off on something simple, and if you have extra cash in your wallet get him a bunch of fun materials.
