I decided to explore Hunting creek down by 495 in Alexandria
yesterday. It wasn't a serious outing because I was testing out a
beautiful bamboo rod I bought off ebay. I'm setting it up with sinking
line and giving it to my dad for Christmas. He lives on an island
outside of Charleston and all the ponds are tidal so he literally need
only step outside his back door to fish for stripers. Tough life being
retired, ay?
Anyway, the trip was a resounding failure fishwise. I parked at Lake
Brennan and waded Cameron run down to Lake Cook. Beautiful stream but
I didn't even see any bait fish. I gave up around Lake Cook tried in
there for a bit, got nothing and walked back using the trail. Epic
Fail.
On the plus side, the rod is beautiful and I feel incredibly fortunate
to have snagged it for $107 off eBay. It was constructed from a
vintage blank someone found in a storage locker and finished up. I was
surprised at how heavy it was for being a 6wt but the action on it is
flipping brilliant! Finding a heavy reel to balance it might be a
chore though.
On that note, can anyone recommend someone or somewhere who could
restore another bamboo rod I purchased for myself? It is missing
several guides, needs a new cork grip and (not sure if this is a
problem and/or fixable but) is slightly warped.
