Thanks Dan D for the Jones Point suggestion, great location and an easy
put-in for my SUP. Saturday was gorgeous, couldn't resist getting on the
water. I paddled upriver and drifted down with wind and tide a few times to
cast at the second and third pylons from shore under the 495 bridge, but
just as Dan predicted It wasn't until I drifted inside the first pylon - out
of reach of the bait-casters on shore - that I got a striper hit and brought
a 17 incher onto the board. It just lay there posing while I tried to dig
out my phone, but it flopped over the side before I got it. Not exactly a
beast but my first striper, bummed not to have a pic to show!
Caught it on a brown and white bead-eyed clouser (5 wt rod!), probably 8-10
ft down. It put up a great fight and dragged my paddleboard around as we
wrestled. Great time and made my day for sure! Strangely, the bait guys on
shore weren't as enthusiastic about it, looked like they were getting
blanked. In late afternoon a couple of bass boats got into some at the
second pylon. Later in the afternoon when the clouds came in it was
definitely more active, with lots of jumpers. Thanks again for the tip, Dan,
I'll go back there for sure - next time with an 8 wt.
