Sent from my iPhoneHey! We slept in a cabin and fished the Jackson all weekend for kicks this weekend. High points:--1. The cabin was home to a small House Mouse (Mus musculus) that we could hear moving about after dark. We had some food on the counter top, but this guy's plan of attack was to simply run out from under the oven, leap onto the lid of the trash can, and rummage around for bits inside. The plastic bag moving around and crinkling tipped us off that there was likely a mouse, which I confirmed the 1st night. Even though the counter had better and more food, he went to the trash can every time. Why? Because that's what he's always done and it works. Rodents are simple, and I can admire that.House mouse. Gotcha. No Hanta Virus -- that's deer mice (P. maniculatus). Great. Good.Oh, and the shower was the kind with one little stream of water coming out of the spigot, kind of like a goat peeing on your back.2. Walked almost to death up at Hidden Valley, but caught a decent brown trout in a slow pool. Probably 15-16" fish. Not a monster, but okay. There were a lot of people fishing up there. More than I thought. One guy used a folding bike to race up to the Special Reg area and it looked like a good idea. We got a few other fish, but not too many.3. Felt bottom boots are best -- period. Done. I have vibrams, studded, and felt.....I'll always use the felts if there are rocks. I don't what anyone else says. Leaves are slippery, but the felts are so good on rocks they're worth it IMO.4. We did very well at Gathright yesterday. I can live for 1.5 years off of one day like yesterday. The trusty 3-weight and my preferred down/across presentation and my modified eel cast (the spey guys probably know this one) worked well.I actually am always thinking downstream....upstream presentations are morally reprehensible to tell you the truth. It's a bad habit to get into -- don't fall for it! If you find yourself doing it, you're going to probably die poor and lonely. It's only okay if you twitch your rod to pull the fly under and then fish it across/down after the drift.I did take Dan's advice and went to the outfall (dam) and fished a greased 2/0 leaded clouser minnow up in the surface film, but it was surprisingly unproductive! We'll need to talk when he returns, I must have missed something, or mixed something up.I need to pull some camera pics, but we all caught a mess of fish and had a really great time out there.
