From 6:30 - 10:00 we only had 3 fish in the boat and were getting kind of bored and irritable.  We had anchored near a seam a ways out from the boat dock and just couldn't get much action.  

AT 10:00 we moved much closer to the bank (not far from the spey casting playground-area) where the current was dead and began to slay the fish.  3 fish went to over 50 in the next 3 hours or so.  It seems like the shad were holding in essentially "slack" water, which was awesome.  I like fishing for most warmwater fish in "slack" areas, keeping a straight line to the fly, which gives a great feel for biting fish.   I think those integrated shooting heads are really great for a straight line to the fly.   I was happy to get this with the shad versus having to casting upstream, mend, and hope to get hit on the bottom of the swing (which is what I expected today).  

Anyway -- Bethy worked the fenwick ff80 with a 250 grain shooting head like a champ!  She landed the biggest hickory and the only American shad of the day!  I used the fenwick ff857 with a 300 grain line, but with about 5-6' cut off to work a bit better on my glass 7-weights.  Rich Farino -- thank you for selling me that line a long while ago, you were totally right about the effectiveness of the super-fast, full sinkers and they paid off today.  We talked to a few other folks around us who were using floating lines, and one guy with a sink tip and reported having less luck.  A couple of spinning guys came over and started talking to us and wanted to know what kind of line we were using on fly gear.  Everyone was friendly and getting on very well for as crowded as it was out there.  

We are exhausted now and need to go to bed.  What a fun day!

If anyone else was out there, we were the weridos using paddles on the rowboat instead of oars because I suck at rowing.
