Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Digest for tidal-potomac-fly-rodders@googlegroups.com - 15 updates in 5 topics

Quick Rapahannock Shad question . . . Is all the fishing downstream of Rte 1 or do fish hold in some of the pockets upstream as well?

Hey! We were inspired to get out and do the shad run today and man am I
glad we did. I only went once last year and had a good day, but always
heard about the huge numbers you can get on a good day --

From 6:30 - 10:00 we only had 3 fish in the boat and were getting kind of
bored and irritable. We had anchored near a seam a ways out from the boat
dock and just couldn't get much action.

AT 10:00 we moved *much* closer to the bank (not far from the spey casting
playground-area) where the current was dead and began to* slay* the fish.
3 fish went to over 50 in the next 3 hours or so. It seems like the shad
were holding in essentially "slack" water, which was awesome. I like
fishing for most warmwater fish in "slack" areas, keeping a straight line
to the fly, which gives a great feel for biting fish. I think those
integrated shooting heads are really great for a straight line to the fly.
I was happy to get this with the shad versus having to casting upstream,
mend, and hope to get hit on the bottom of the swing (which is what I
expected today).

Anyway -- Bethy worked the fenwick ff80 with a 250 grain shooting head like
a champ! She landed the biggest hickory and the only American shad of the
day! I used the fenwick ff857 with a 300 grain line, but with about 5-6'
cut off to work a bit better on my glass 7-weights. Rich Farino -- thank
you for selling me that line a long while ago, you were totally right about
the effectiveness of the super-fast, full sinkers and they paid off today.
We talked to a few other folks around us who were using floating lines,
and one guy with a sink tip and reported having less luck. A couple of
spinning guys came over and started talking to us and wanted to know what
kind of line we were using on fly gear. Everyone was friendly and getting
on very well for as crowded as it was out there.

We are exhausted now and need to go to bed. What a fun day!

If anyone else was out there, we were the weridos using paddles on the
rowboat instead of oars because I suck at rowing.

Thanks Rob - it sure felt that way ;).

I did get a couple of fish on one of those damsels actually and was
thinking about you!

Amazing.

But how do you hold the fish when your standing on your head?

TurbineBlade <doublebclan@gmail.com>: Apr 16 06:05PM -0700

Oh! The same way I can make a cast where the line goes in an different
direction than the rod tip (oh snap!) --

satan, the great deceiver.

Hey guys,

Couple of us are going to SNP for the day on Monday. Haven't decided where
yet. Does anyone want to join us? Weather permitting of course.

I would love to, but work is getting in the way! Have fun out there ;).

Yesterday Misha and I went out to Fletcher's to catch shad. I took a
Cabela's LSI 8wt that I had Phil Evans chop off the tip-top from and put a
new one where the first snake guide used to be. It was a 9-ft rod, now is
about 8'10".

I did this because I read in the Ellis "Bassin' With a Fly Rod" that
stiffer tips are better for fishing sinking flies for bass. The rod is a
little tricky to cast with a floating line, but I discovered yesterday that
it handles a 300-grain Orvis Depth Charge line beautifully. It lifted and
loaded the line a lot more easily than it did with the tip-top intact. It
also felt like I was feeling the bites better, and hooking up more easily.

The casting was great, but the fishing was a little slow. Misha managed a
dozen or so; I caught fewer, including one nice sized hickory.

The fishing really picked up towards the evening, when two police boats
waked us headed to Chain Bridge -- and holy crap, it was wall to wall fire
trucks on Chain Bridge. We were looking downstream mostly, and hadn't
noticed that every single vehicle all across the bridge had flashing lights
on top. The DC Fire boat also waked us headed upstream, and three
helicopters zoomed overhead.

When we got off the water, Alex told me the firefighters said something
about 'rappelling'. About a dozen firefighters had walked over the canal
bridge down to the boat docks. It looked like they might want to rent. I
thought about telling them to check in at the boathouse, but it was almost
6pm anyway.

When Misha and I tried to leave, we discovered the upper lot and the ramp
blocked by a ladder truck and an ambulance with a raft on top. I guess the
firefighters were deciding whether they had to carry the raft down to the
water, because the ambulance was not going to fit through the tunnel under
the canal.

We had to wait until the ladder truck could back up a little, so we could
sneak around it. Canal Road was total gridlock, so we dodged up Reservoir
to head for Key Bridge.

Turns out some hikers found a body:
http://www.arlnow.com/2015/04/15/breaking-body-found-on-rocks-near-chain-bridge/

Anyways, it's always good to get out. I was pleasantly surprised by the
rod, and will probably make that my shad rod from now on.

FYI don¹t all you TPFR members start breaking the tips off your rods in the
hopes of having a better casting rod for shad. You¹ll need that tip for
trout fishing ;)

Remick, your adroit and very topical comment has actually made me realize
something profound. Has anyone ever heard of Godwin's Law
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law>? TL;DR, it postulates that
the longer an internet thread continues, the probability that someone will
bring up Hitler or the Nazis approaches 1. I would like to propose a
corollary theory that applies specifically to fishing forums and
discussions: in a conversation about fishing rods, the longer the
conversation goes on, the probability that someone will say "just the tip"
approaches 1. Someone else can name it something clever.
