{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Needwood Largie

Gene, see this about pheasant feathers, such as the aftershafts (mis-IDed acc. to Gartside as "filo plume"), see http://bit.ly/14SOdmn.

Gurglers look cool and I enjoy tying them, but to be honest I've only caught huge bluegill on them ;).  One day I'll get a nice LMB, I'm sure of it.

We've been catching most of our bass lately (including some pretty fat ones) on #10-12 marabou minnows....well, actually filoplume minnows actually (Rich pointed this out -- my rooster butt feathers).  The only thing I can figure is that they look similar to mummichogs and/or banded killifish that are thick around here.  You can cast 'em on a 3-4 weight and catch darn-near anything.

See you guys at the tie!

In addition to poppers and gurglers,  try almost anything that floats and makes a commotion At Widewater 2 weeks ago the two bass I caught were taken on unweighted Yuck Bugs. Almost anything that makes a commotion on the surface will tempt Mr. Largemeouth.

I live not far from Needwood. Did you fish from a boat? the bank? That little pond behind Needwood Mansion?
Find me at the Beer Tie if you're coming tonight, I'm tying gurglers.

This healthy largemouth was my only hookup for today at Lake Needwood in MD.  It propelled itself out of the water multiple times as it attempted to throw the hook.  Tons of tiny bluegill in there as well.

There was another angler hooking up every few casts on spinning gear and with what seemed to be a popper with a bucktail teaser trailing behind it.

Anybody have any top water fly suggestions for targeting bass in still water?
The gurgler?
