{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Hemlock Overlook quick report

Hey Eric,

Yeah, we had the suspicion that it would be slow but (for whatever reason) decided to give it a go.  The stream is really nice, but we'll probably limit it to Spring/Summer.  We still had a good time - live and learn.  ;)

I have never had any luck at hemlock in the fall. I think once the water temp reaches the mid 50's they start to seek out deeper holes or head back into the reservoir.  One place to try out would be the train bridge that crosses the river about a mile upstream from the main trail down to the water.  I have fished that spot during the summer and the water is pretty deep there probably 10-15 ft.  I managed to pull a couple of smallies out of that hole earlier in the year.  The hike isn't too bad in the summer when you can wear sneekers and wet wade, but I'm not a big fan of walking a mile + in my waders just to try it out and hope some fish are there.  I think I will be waiting till springtime before I fish there again.

My wife and I hit hemlock this morning for a few hours -- lots of people were there walking the path with family post-Thanksgiving ;).

My wife caught the lone bluegill of the day -- I was totally skunked.  From walking the path on both banks and looking around pretty intensely, there didn't appear to be much in the water other than about a million shad messing around.  We saw several dead shad along the bottom as well, but I don't know enough of shad life history to know what they're doing right about now...though we haven't seen them too much in the past.
