Great news, phase 1, soil and sedmiment testing is underway at Fletcher's Cove. Once complete, we'll hopefully have a path forward regarding the removal of sediment.

April 2018 Friends of Fletchers Cove Update

The Phase 1 sediment and soil testing, funded by the District's Department of Energy and Environment, is now underway. This project will provide the foundation for a detailed work plan, which will better define the scope of work needed for the Phase 2 maintenance dredging of Fletchers Cove. Once the testing is completed this fall, Friends of Fletchers Cove will use the work plan to obtain estimates for the overall dredging cost and will be in an optimal position to solicit additional financial support.

As a friends group, we have been fortunate to have DOEE as a partner and stakeholder in this endeavor. DOEE and its Fisheries & Wildlife division will continue to provide grant opportunities that explore potential funding sources to carry out our mission. The dredging process is complex and the plan to perform this work cannot be accomplished without the cooperation of DOEE and the responsible federal agencies: National Park Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Army Corp of Engineers.

FFC is developing stronger bonds with other Nation's River stakeholders who have pledged support for our core mission. Among these, the Anacostia Watershed Society and the Potomac Riverkeeper Network will provide much needed guidance and expertise as we develop a long term plan to maintain public access to the Potomac River at Fletchers Cove. We ask all FFC supporters to continue to advocate for our cause and help strengthen our growing coalition.
