{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fishing Report, From the Fort. (South Florida)

Awesome report! Looks like a trip well worth it. Did you see any signs of the issues related to Lake Okeechobee overflows?

I just got back from a 10 day beach trip to The Fort. Well, Fort Pierce and the rest of Hutchinson Island. I spent 6 full days plying the surf searching for Snook and 3 full days sharing a boat with my brother Brian and our Guide Captain Scott Crippen prowling off shore and the Indian River Lagoon.

This was my first time committing real time to surf fishing with the Fly and it was absolutely amazing. I caught a bit of a break with the water conditions and the amount of bait I found but I had 5 great days of sight fishing to good size Snook and even managed to jump a couple of Tarpon in the surf. One of the Tarpon was 60-70lbs and to date is the only fish I was happy to have spit a fly, as I was using an 8wt.

Offshore provided everything that makes ocean fishing so cool. Big waterscapes, gorgeous skies, flying fish, huge ocean turtles, and……fish. We tied into some cool ocean critters like Sails, Mahi, Cuda, but the highlight for me was sticking a Cobia on the Fly. We finally bailed on a spot after the Bull Sharks got so hopped up that they took a Cobia off my brother's line boat side. Crappy to lose a fish that way but an awesome sight to see. I can't imagine trying to find fish in such a huge place. Even though our guide Scott grew up fishing these waters it was no less impressive to see how he goes about hunting.

The last night we picked at the dock lights and got into some Poon, Snook, and Trout.

In addition to sampling the many local eats and drinks when my brother and I travel together we also like to engage in a healthy amount of high jinx and tom foolery. Thank you to Captain Scott Crippen for both enduring and participating in this, and for putting me on my first Cobia and Poon!  My arm feels like it is about to fall off from chucking a lot of 9-10-12 wts, but I would do it again next week if I could.
