{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} It finally happened to me!

So I have been fishing this area for three years now and I have heard each year about fishing for shad and having massive fishing days.  Well my best of days had been in the 10 and 12 fish caught per day.  I assumed that It was just me being new/not in the right place/time/etc…  Well it all ended on Thursday.

I arrived at Fletchers at 8 AM a little cold but happy to be there.  I had plans to teach a friend of mine to fish for the first time and what better than to fish for shad.  So I rowed out waiting for him to arrive and with my first cast, I brought in a 17" Hickory.  I ended up catching a couple more before he showed up and then I rowed back to pick him up.  I was able to catch around twenty hickories during the next four hours but I spent most of the time trying to teach him how to cast a spinning rod more than 15 feet consistently.  He also lost my reel in the water that I was lucky enough to get back. I was using a duel fly system with chartreuse shad puffs until I remembered someone mentioning to go for orange flies.  I decided to try it out and with the first cast and the next four cast,I brought in a total of five hickories.  I never had an experience like that before (5 for 5) and I rather enjoyed it.  At around 1PM, my friend had had enough but he had caught a couple and enjoyed himself.

After I rowed him back, I calling Khalil to see if he wanted to go out fishing with me.  A man after my own heart, he showed up in 15 minutes ready to fish and we were off.  We tried a couple spots until we found THE SPOT!  Between 3 pm to 6 pm, we slamming them with every other cast dealing in a nice 16" to 17" hickory.  At one point, Khalil got a fish on his line and asked for the net.  As I was handing him the net, I got a fish on.  As we trying to juggle it all, the net went over board.  As I reached for it (and missed it), I lost my fish and then Khalil tried the same and lost his.  We then raised the anchor and rowed after it.  We did get it back and then raced back to our spot before someone tried to take it over.  Luckily we got back in time before a boat full of fishermen took the spot.  And it was back on.  It came to the point that at the end of the day, we had that boat of fishermen threatening to "Pierce my Ears!" with there lures if we didn't move on as they cast 10 feet from the boat. Khalil can vouch for every part of this. Well they ended up leaving before we did.

I never did actually count each one but I estimate I caught at least 50 before leaving for the night. I biked home content, a little sun burnt and I looking forward to beating this record.

Khalil, Thanks for the fishing and let me know if I forgot something.
