{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Youghigheny trip

After a long summer with the new baby and few opportunities to spend a concentrated amount of time fishing, I gave myself a pretty good bday present and spent last weekend at the Youghiogheny River in western MD. I stayed with Don and Karen Herschfield at their bnb Streams and Dreams. Autumn was in full effect and I was flashing surrounded by all the colors of fall. Seems most folk tend to skip the Yough because the Savage and North Branch are closer, but I'm glad I kept driving. Over two days I got into quite a nice range of wild rainbows, with my largest about "19. I also got an impromptu casting lesson from Don, former guide and instructor. I took a bunch of pix and posted on my blog here: http://deadbait.wordpress.com/

It requires a bit of planning, but I can't recommend this river enough. There were a few other fly fishers but if you're willing to walk for 10 minutes, you'll feel you have the river to yourself. One tip, they stock at the bridge at Sang Run road, if you'd prefer wild fish, head upstream (which is actually south as the river flows south to north). Give the tail race pool a shot, but keep walking. And bring midges, ants, stimulators.
