I hired a guide and floated the South Fork of the Shenandoah on Saturday. The river levels and flow really didn't get impacted by the storm on Thursday, but the water ended up being a LOT more stained than either of us were expecting. There was probably a foot or less of visibility to start the morning. We got skunked for the first few hours despite trying nearly every fly in my and his fly box. Finally, he anchored us at the confluence of a small feeder stream that had a nice eddy, plus some dead water. We maximized our ability for productivity so the guide started tossing a fly as well to see if we could figure out what would work. He connected on his second cast and handed me the rod and had a big sunfish. Now that we had the skunk off our boat, it was up to me. The sunfish took a gold/copper Kreelex, so I kept throwing that. A couple casts later, I connected with a nice largemouth (attached). I ended up taking a couple more smallies and another big sunnie out of that little hole before we floated on. Visibility got a little better (not too much), so that helped too. The rest of the day I hit the smallies pretty good. Nothing of great size - my biggest was about 14" - but they were still as fun as could be, and fought plenty hard. I probably got at least 15 smallmouth on the day. The guide was impressed with the numbers we put up given the conditions. I was impressed with the numbers period, so I'd love to see what it's like without the "given the conditions" factor!
