{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fishing near Key Largo

Key Largo is tough, especially if you don't have a boat or kayak.  I've been going to the keys every year since 2005 (usually in May) and always spend a couple days doing DIY stuff and have never found much around Key Largo.  There just aren't many places that are accessible. As you get down past Islamorada into the middle keys there are more places/flats that you can wade or cast into channels.

I honestly wouldn't recommend spending the money on a guide this time of year.  Guides in the keys are extremely expensive ($650-$700 is the going rate, not counting tip) and this isn't really a great time of year.  I'm going to be down there the week after thanksgiving myself and thought about calling the guy I fish with but I just don't see it being worth the while.  Fall was traditionally a good time for bonefish in the keys but that is not the case anymore although I'm sure there are plenty of guys trying.  You can probably get someone to take you up into the park and fish for trout and maybe reds, but I personally wouldn't pay the money to do that.  You could call Sandy Moret's Florida Keys outfitters and see what they tell you.  It is not in Key Largo but they can probably give you an idea of what is up.

One other option would be to rent a boat.  I have rented them from Bud and Mary's in Islamorada for maybe like $200.

Hi guys,
I'm gonna go to Florida for a week, and am looking for suggestions on what to fish for around key largo (I won't have a kayak).  Looking for suggestions on lakes, shorelines, possibly a guide for a day.

Thanks
