Where are you fishing?  The only place I fish with the plain rubber soles is here locally where the sediment gives you all the  traction you need ;). 

I will not fish a single trout stream without felt or studs, period. 

I prefer korkers with the removable soles.  I beat them to death in a few months with hiking into small streams and not caring for them in any way whatsoever....but consider it like replacing tippet (expendable).
