Wanted to give a quick report on a great week-long trip John led to Las Buitreras Lodge in Patagonia, Argentina. It was a fantastic trip, in an incredibly unique part of the world.
We were casting 2-handed rods (7-9 wt., 12'-13') for sea run brown trout, switching between skagit and scandi lines. Everyone got on fish, and a highlight was a great fight with a 11 lb., 26" sea run. The first half of the week was very windy, which made casting a challenge, especially from the left side as I am relatively new to two-handed casting. Though, the rougher surface of the river due to the wind was a little more forgiving for the heavier scandi/skagit lines. By the end of the week, the wind had died down and we were fishing in t-shirts. I had luck with the copper johns during the day, and large black streamers in the evening. We waded a bit, but managing the river current was not particularly challenging. The guides were excellent, and knowledgeable.
The daily schedule was unique as well due to the climate and sunlight. We'd get up at 7, have breakfast, pack into the pickup trucks at 8:30 and be on the river by 9 (depending on where on the river we fished). The lodge is on a massive 165,000 hectare estanca (ranch) with about 50km of private waterfront. Everyone would gather back at the lodge at 1pm for a large meal, and usually, a long nap before heading back to the river at 5:30pm for 4 more hours of fishing. Sun goes down at 10:30-11pm, so there's more time to strike throughout the day. The river became much more active in the dusk/evening hours. Everyone met back at the lodge at 10:30-11pm for a smaller meal and beer/wine before bed. I can't say enough about the staff, food and wine- they were fantastic, the best of any trip I've been on. It made for a fun and comfortable place to come back and put your feet up after a long day.
Overall, it was a great trip. Anyone looking into fishing in S. America should check it out.
