Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fishing Near Lexington, KY

Thanks for all the info.  I've heard about the Elkhorn a few times, so it is on my list of must finds once it warms up outside.  Hopefully ill have some pics soon.

Thanks,

Long time lurker, first time poster...

Dan, you are in luck, there are many stellar fishing opportunities near Lexington, KY.  I am originally from Lexington, but have been in DC for the past 6 years.  I grew up canoeing and spin fishing Elkhorn Creek and can attest it's a prime smallmouth fishery.  Ironically enough, I didn't start fly fishing until after the move to DC, but have found time to fly fish Elkhorn several times during returns home.  There are a lot of public access spots, but I recommend covering water via canoe, check out www.canoeky.com for rentals.  In terms of flies, I've had the best luck with CK baitfish, clawdads, and crittermites, as the bass forage is similar to the Shenandoah.  Additionally, there are a lot of farm ponds & creeks that hold decent largemouth and carp, but you will need to network for access.

In addition to bass, the Cumberland River, about 2 hours south of Lexington, is a premier tailwater.  The fishery suffered for about 5 years due to construction on the dam, but has been recovering very strong over the past two years.  There are a couple of guides that drift the river, but you can also wade, depending upon dam output.  Check out www.CumberlandTroutGuide.com  or www.CumberlandDrifters.com to put you on some big fish!

Lastly, the recently closed Lexington Angler put together a great fly fishing map.  Sadly, I haven't had the time to explore all the areas, but would recommend exploring Swift Camp Creek in Red River Gorge.  Even if you strike out fishing, the Gorge is an awesome place to hike.

I've attached some pics and the maps from Lexington Angler.  Tight Lines and best of luck in KY!

Thanks for the links.  This will be my third common wealth.  Spent a year in PA, born and raised in VA and not KY.

I am sad to announce that I am moving from the great state of VA to Kentucky.  With a house and job already figured out.  Next on the list is fishing.  Does anyone have any experience with the eastern half of the state.  I will be living near Lexington, but not afraid to make a couple hour drive.  Even if it means into a neighboring state.  Looking for streams that hold native browns primarily but have nothing against chasing bass, brookies, or delayed harvest fish.

Thanks in advance,
