{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bass'n in the Mitten!

I made it back to my home state of Michigan for the first time in 5 years over the weekend. I got to hang with the family, see old friends and do some fishing. I brought my 6 banger and figured I would poke around a few of my old Largemouth spots I used to fish in High School. They all gave up fish with relative ease... maybe because fall is starting up north, or maybe because the trails to these spots were less trodden since I last saw them last, or maybe just because I new the spots so well.  At any rate it was fun to whack a few fish from my old stalking grounds. I did most of the fishing with an old Shakespeare Honey Stick, a fiberglass rod that is probably as old as I am. It looked odd with a Mirage Reel hanging off it but it was in my parents basement and looked lonely so I took her for a spin.

My dad is not much of a fly fisherman, but he likes to cast and we like to spend time together so I wanted to fish with him while I was home. I was lucky enough to book James Hughes out of Schultz Outfitters in Ypsilanti, MI. If you are a warm water enthusiast and you ever find yourself in SE Michigan, look these guys up! James has some crazy good energy and clearly knows his waters very well.

We started the 11 mile float with my pops up front...he had his first multi fish day with the fly rod and took his first Smallie on a fly as well. The second half of the day was total bliss as James put a Frog pattern on and the Bass turned into complete savages! Fish were bombing the pattern and coming out of the water as they attempted to kill or stun the artificial on the first strike. The best fish of the day taped out at 17" and had some nasty wounds on it that were only a day or two old, clearly from a bird of prey and most likely from the eagle we had seen just up stream.

It was a great trip home and a great float with my pops and James.

Go Tigers!
