Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The Gauntlet.

Davenport and I fished lake Audubon in Reston today determined to catch a fish on Meade's Gutless Frog. It worked. She  rough her SUP which she and my wife took turns paddling. I now have to buy an SUP for the wife.

Well I am out of the running - I went to the one spot I knew I would have the best chance to land large specimens of multiple species - the Savage - and was 1 for 3.

Nonetheless, I had a pretty nice day. The first fish of the day -also the nicest - was the brownie. I estimated him at about 14/15 inches. Very heavy bodied fish for its length - round like a torpedo. Gave me a really nice fight. I imagined him being close to the magic mark during the tussle, but it was just the impressive conditioning of the tailwater.

I encountered fish all day, both nymphing and on dries. Every technique worked just about. Targeted dries in the pocket water. Nymphing in the heavy runs. Midging in the slow pools, forcing me to taper down to 7x flouro. Did try a streamer, briefly, but didn't pick up a fish.

The one "qualifying" fish I caught was a brookie. This deep bodied brook trout came from a deep tongue to crush my orange stimulator. 12 inches at least. I actually caught a bunch more brookies than I've ever caught at the Savage before, picking up 4 or 5. They must have had a good year class lately because in years past I've only picked up one here or there.

I fished the tailwater until about 4 pm then decided my back could use a break. I brought my inflatable kayak, so that meant I could launch on the reservoir itself, where I ve heard there are big smallies. When I got on the water it was glassy and awesome. I fished a big chartreuse popper right along the shore. I picked up one dinner (side) plate sized bluegill and the pictured bass this way. The bass hit the fly 3 inches from the bank ( the reservoir banks were very steep, and the water level was low, so a foot out from the bank it was usually about 2 feet deep). She jumped twice for me and even took line swimming straight down into the depths. I really wanted a good smallmouth though, so I put on my sinking line and fished a pearlescent kreelex. Had a couple of bites and did hook a smallie that jumped off, although it was nowhere near qualifying size.
