{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bonefish on the fly

I just returned from a trip to Mexico where a good friend conveniently scheduled his wedding near Ascension Bay in Tulum. The ceremony was great, but the fly fishing absolutely blew my mind.

If you ever get the chance to head down there, visit the flats. You won't regret it. Hooked into these guys on a gotcha fly and an 8 wt. Pulled in a barracuda too, but the excitement got to me before the camera could. Definitely a trip I won't soon forget. Now if I could only get shad at fletcher's to do the same.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dang! FYCC postponed due to flooding.

Due to forecast high river levels and the current Potomac River flood advisory for the greater Washington, DC area, this Friday and Saturday's Family and Youth Casting Call at Fletcher's Cove is being postponed.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but the safety of youth fisherman and our volunteers is paramount.

Event organizers are exploring alternate dates and will be back in touch when one has been established. Please be sure to visit  www.familyandyouthcastingcall.com for updates.

Many thanks,
FYCC

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: bass poppers

I'm with the others on strip set/slip strike. Also make sure the body of the popper is clear of the hook point. When  tying my rule of thumb is that the body ends above the point of the hook and doesn't go past it.

Hi Everyone;

Here's the latest on the 7th annual Family and Youth Casting Call coming up early next month at Fletcher's Cove.

Call for Volunteers

Family & Youth Casting Call

Schools of Shad and Schools learning Fishing!

The Family & Youth Casting Call (FYCC) is looking for volunteers to mentor youngsters in fishing and casting at Fletcher's Cove over two days in early May.

FYCC is a fun fishing event held annually at Fletcher's Cove on the C&O Canal in Washington DC. This year FYCC will take place Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 from 10 am to 3 pm. FYCC coincides with what is usually the height of the shad run in the Potomac River.

On Friday, like schools of shad swimming up the Potomac, buses from local schools will drop off around 200 children at Fletcher's at specified intervals where they will have their first fishing experiences and lesson.  On Saturday, the fishing is open to all children; more than 400 and their immediate families are expected to take part.

On both days, the youngsters will receive casting instruction and assistance from volunteers to help them fish in a designated section of the canal generously stocked for this special event. Both days will also feature conservation activities, exhibits and displays.

We're seeking volunteers to teach kids to bait their hooks, cast their lines, and reel in their catch. Other volunteers are needed to help teach knot tying and rig and repair rods/reels.

Volunteers can help out for half a day, a full day or for both days of the event, and can combine FYCC participation with some serious shad fishing on the river.

Volunteers will receive a free Tee shirt, meals and the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped teach the next generation of anglers!

Please help youngsters learn to fish at FYCC. Register now under the Volunteer tab at www.familyandyouthcastingcall.com. Signing up is important to help us order the right amount of food and Tee shirts.

Many thanks.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} bass poppers

Do they have a weed guard on them?  I normally cut them off the top water stuff I buy, as they affect hook sets for me.  I don't set the hook on top water until I feel a solid tug, but that's just my personal opinion.

Thanks,

Dan Barrett

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Gila National Forest, NM

Hey I don't comment much here anymore, but since moving back to NM I try to respond to anything in the area if I can help.  Fires or not fishing is tough in the Gila.  If backpacking is your main focus, you are going to the right place.  Its one of the most amazing places to visit.  The isolation and remoteness means very few backcountry visitors compared to most other backpacking spots in the lower 48.  Snow lake is stocked, and the adjacent streams (Gilita creek, etc.) have fish, including the Gila trout.  You must have the free Gila trout permit along with your license to fish certain streams where there might be Gila trout.  The particulars are listed at NMDG&F.
Your line weight isn't as critical as rod length.  I fish many very small streams here in NM.  A 7'-6" 3wt. is too much for a fish that can fit on one hand, but what makes it difficult is fishing a stream that isn't as wide as my rod is long.  Special casts are required.  Sometimes no casts are even possible.  Still fun though.  The Gila river itself is wider and provides more casting ease, but could be fairly stained right now.
Flows are increasing now so when you go will be important especially if you plan on crossing streams to get into the back country, which is basically how you do it in the Gila.
Sit in a hot spring if you can.  Turkey creek hot spring is truly amazing.
Good luck.
BH.

Yea, you were probably getting hits from sunfish, who love poppers but can't really get their mouths around the big ones.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Trout in the ClassroomBecause of the rain, several TIC releases have been rescheduled from this week

Hi;

You all probably have heard about Trout in the Classroom (TIC). If not, please visit www.troutintheclassroom.org for general info. It's a program in which elementary through high school students learn about cold water conservation by incubating trout eggs, hatching and raising the alevin to fingerling size and stocking them in local streams.

Around 70 Maryland schools (Virginia has over 200) take part in TIC. Montgomery County has 20 schools in the program.

We're now scheduling release programs for Montgomery County schools in May and June. There's a special need for volunteers who can spare the time to demonstrate fly-tying, mentor students in the basics of fly-casting or help collect and identify macroinvertibrates and other critters that are indicators of stream health as well as potential trout food. All the releases are from 10 AM to 1 PM, mainly in Little Seneca Creek.on Clopper Road at The Lodge near Boyds. The Lodge is around a 10-minute drive from Exit 10 off I-270 near Gaithersburg.

Because of the rain, several TIC releases have been rescheduled from this week. The urgent problem is that some folks who kindly volunteered to help have other commitments for the new release dates.

We could really use almost immediate help on Monday, May 5, when 90 students will release their fingerlings into Little Seneca Creek. That event needs one volunteer to demonstrate fly-tying and one or two to mentor elementary fly-casting for groups of students from Wood Middle and the Barnesville School who will rotate through a series of activity stations.  A fly-tying table and chair and fly rods and reels will be available on site.

More fly-tying, casting and if possible help with seining bugs and critters out of Little Seneca and identifying them are needed on Friday, May 9 and Wednesday, May 14. (FYI a seining of Little Seneca last Friday produced lots of mayfly and fishfly nymphs and a sculpin, but no caddises.) Other releases are scheduled for May 22, 23, 26, 29, 30 and June 10.

You don't have to be an expert fly-tyer or a Lefty Kreh to demonstrate the fundamental alchemy of fly-tying (turning feathers, steel and thread into live insects) or basic fly-casting, so please don't hesitate to step up if you can spare the time.  The kids are great and the release events are always fun.

If you can spare the time to help, you'll find it a rewarding experience, particularly since the future of our fishable waters will all too soon be in the hands of these youngsters.

Tight lines and hope to hear from you.

Maryland Trout in the classroom

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad from Shore Tips

Hey man,

Def need a sink tip with weighted flies or a sinking line, but It's all about positioning from the shore. Find a big eddy and a point where you can get out there- lower tides obviously help. I like to fish the pinch where the main current and the eddy merge cast upstream into the current and strip up through the seem - usually on a 45 and usually fast. Keep it controlled though, you'll have better luck with even strips - they miss a lot. It's also a lot of patience because you are not as mobile. Don't get discouraged though and keep varying the time you let it sink and your retrieving speed. You will get into fish and when it rains, it pours.

Hope this helps,

Js

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Family and Youth Casting Call

I am signed up and ready to go for Friday!! I think this is year #4 for me, I have a blast every time. Hope to see some fellow TPFR folks out as well. Last year may have seemed a bit like the battle of Thermopylae, but at the end of the day it was a glorious feeling.

I will be coffeed up and ready for the youths!

PS. Brad,  I love added enticement, glad you are rolling back into town, cant wait to see ya big guy. You are indeed a TPFR in the fullest extent of its meaning...and by the fullest extent of the meaning...I mean you are a Tidal Potomac Fly Rodder and  a True Player For Real!

Hi Everyone;

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Shad from Shore Tips

I tried to fish from shore last year while my name was on the waitlist for a boat but didn't have much luck. It's tough to really get your line out there with a fly rod, you really need to get into the main currents to have a shot at fish. Granted I didn't have waders but I think the area around Fletcher's would be tough to wade.

I'd suggest using a spinning rod if you want to fish from shore.

As others have said, the area around chain bridge seems to work well for shore fishing.

I currently only have a floating line unfortunately and hopefully that wont hinder my ability to catch a shad!

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Shad from Shore Tips

Not to drown this subject down to much more, but I would also suggest fishing at and above Chain Bridge. This is my "go-to" site for shore fishing the Potomac for Shad. If you search the website, you'll find a ton of useful information, including maps. If you are at all interested in learning more, please let me know. Always happy to lend a hand.

I went out on Friday afternoon for a couple hours and landed over 25 fish, including a crappie, carp and catfish. I also had a massive follow from a 25-30" snakehead, which got the blood pumpin'. I prefer to fish an incoming tide timed to afternoon/evening, but everyone has their preference.

definitely going to invest in a sinking leader. and I plan on tying the SHAD DART per Rob Snowhites youtube page (which is a godsend, thank you rob for posting those videos)

I have had a few good days from shore this season, but it is difficult due to the fact that there are not a ton of places where you have room to backcast and the fact that there are tons of snags.  With a floating line, the snags won't be a problem, but you are going to have a very tough time getting down to where the fish are.  I have heard of a couple people having success with a floating line, but it seems that the instances where they are up in the water column are few and far between.  A sinking line is really a huge help, but like I said, you will lose a ton of flies fishing from shore with a sinking line.  Most of the spots where there is room for a backcast are upstream of fletchers.  Shorefishing may be a bit more productive around chain bridge, but it is always crowded up there.

My recommendation would be to get a boat (it is definitely worth the $25) and get a sinking line.
