Spent the weekend in the Canaan Valley near timberline ski resort - on the property of the housing development is a private lake (Spruce Eagle Lake, I think). Its marked as all catch and release, water is crystal clear and nobody fishes there apparently. I took my inflatable tandem/single kayak and fished for about 12 hours total over 4 days. Caught over 75 largemouth, amost all on top water poppers, though a few grabbed a training bug that sunk a few inches. Fish were very aggressive, most in the 1-2 pound range, but a couple of 3s. Reports of bigger fish, but I didn't see any. Most of lake is pretty shallow - 3-5 feet with good weeds. No particular fly was the winner, all worked pretty well. Retrieve speed was key a couple of times, fast when the wind was blowing. Fish near visibl weeds, but also out in the open lake coming up from the bottom. Used my 10' Echo 6wt mostly.
Huge number of carp visible. I tried a few diffferent flies - crazy charlie and a couple of others, but no hookups. Never made it out to the trout rivers. Great area for an extended weekend stay. Friend of mine has a house that we used and she rents, but there are likley lots of options around Davis and Elkins. Big new section of highway opened, so time to Davis around 3 hours, 1/2 hour less.
