Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 30 second video of shad fry dimpling like rain.

I'm not 100% sure why the fry shad do it. However I do have a theory.  As a prey species and in addition to eating maybe they continually jump like this to confuse predators while they migrate. Other types of bait fish do this.  The less than dime size shad are jumping 6-8" out of the water. The activity occurs mainly at night and early morning over the this entire section of river (near the fall line). Concurrently surprisingly few predators are chasing them. They seem to be mostly headed downriver when doing so. During the light of day I've noticed they tend to ball up and hold in a few pockets acting more like schools of prey.  You may also see balled schools in the canal.  None of this activity is new.  I've observed it for  30+ years.  Always fascinating and makes me appreciate the fishery even more.

Cool.  Thanks for posting.

Why are they doing that?  Are they eating or fleeing predators (bass?)?

Cheers,
